Question Blackberry as Tethered Modem for laptop??

    Hello,
Has anyone had success using a Blackberry as a modem for their laptop?

I have a Blackberry 7250 and would like to ensure it can be used to provide internet access through my laptop.

Salespeople at Future Shop and Best Buy have not heard of this. I found info supporting this idea, but just wondered if anyone has had experience (good or bad).

    Thanks

    Hey,

The only way I know you can do it is if you get internet from your BlackBerry and rout it to the laptop.

You can't plug in an ethernet connection into your Blackberry and rout it. If you do get internet from your Blackberry and rout it you will get a huge internet bill.

Last week a guy in Canada got an 80,000$ bill from bell for doing that because it was from his phone.

... weather is really bad right now in Ontario eh?
    Best regards,
    Jeremy

If you have the data package from your provider - and you have the proper connections, yes, the Blackberry can do this. But you have to have the right plan.

Wow! Jeremy! Thanks for the heads up! $80,000 from bell? I hope he's putting up a heck of a fight on that!

Yes, bad snow storm here. We are about 40 mins from Toronto. We had to power up the snow blower three times today, just to keep the driveway and paths clear!

    Thanks Bethers,

I'll pop into Telus when the snow clears, and see what they have to say. I definately do not want a $80,000 bill, like Jeremy mentioned!

Again - that's up to the plan with your carrier - if you get unlimited data - it's like if you get a cheap phone plan and end up paying for minutes - same thing - with Jeremy's example. It's up to you to get a plan that will work.

I really doubt you will get a good deal because Canada is currently paying higher rates than most developed countries for cell phones at the moment and I don't know if you haven't noticed bud but Bell and Telus burn your pocket!

***'s have been providing this now for at least 10 years, first with the Compaq and even still with the HP Palms ...... personally, with the Blackberry, I do not see why you would want to "dress down" the abilities by using it as an extension for your laptop: the BB does it all itself as it is (and the ***** is better yet -- PS on the *****: wait for the next edition due March).

And, like Jeremy hinted, the rates to hop-scotch your connection does not make sense. It would be incedibly cheaper if not more productive to simply buy your laptop a broadband card (unlimited minutes for about $60-80/mo., and you can buy one from a US provider, since they are international plan-based), and use the BB as intended independently.

And I don't know which Best Buy you are getting your information from, but the backwards logic you are describing may have something to do with the answers you are getting!

    Thanks all!

I have found out that Bell and Telus have the same rates on the Connection Card plans. Yeppers, about $80/month unlimited. But if that's what it takes...at least I know the cost upfront.

    Happy Holidays!
