I have a compaq presario/5400 pc/running on windowsxp
my C:drive is 14.92GB capicity with 5.54GB free space (37%)
my D:drive however is 3.72GB capicity with 99% free space...
Is there any way to even out the load?

No, those are completely separate things. You can free up space on your C drive by defragging (possibly) and by moving large files off the computer onto separate storage devices or disks.
If your D: drive has 99% free space, why not use it. (sorry beth)
You could always re-install some programs to D: and free up some space on Your C: drive... (delete old programs and then defrag)
(data files can just be copied and pasted or moved to D: (change links)
or from now on install any new programs onto D:/programs
Forgive me - the real question is WHAT is the D Drive on that computer - on my laptop computer now the D drive is the disk drive. It can be different on different computers, so I mis-spoke and apologize. The D drive is whatever is in that slot on your motherboard - and on many computers that's the back-up spot - or where vital system information is stored. I used to use it to back up important files on my old desktop.
D: can be a seperate drive or another partition on the single drive....
i.e. I have a laptop with 1 drive split into several partitions (4 actually)
so yes, D: depends on your system....
By the looks of the disk sizes quoted in the first post I would guess that its
a single drive with two partitions C: and D:..........
Ive been reading about partioning and there is quite a bit of info to follow and many different ways and suggestions..very confusing.
Im by far a puter wiz - from what I have understood is that laptops differ a bit from desktops to which I have.
I have cleaned out all the unnecessary file from C: drive/uninstalled programs that I no longer use/defragged/and optimized. And that all did indeed get me quite a bit more space as its now at (37%) and it was at (20%) so the usual house cleaning did help -
Ive formatted D: and thats why Im left with open spaces. I like the idea of uninstalling programs and having them reinstalled in D: if that in fact would work. I have one program that is 316MB and the list goes on -but if that in fact is possible to run programs out of my D: drive - would it be wiser to use it for file I access less often? Or just use D: as my primary.
Your primary will always be C:
Most programs, when installing, give you the option of changing the normal setup path (i.e. c:/programs/newprogramfolder)
You can change this to point to D:/programs etc...............
Now and again a new program will need to be installed only on C: to work properly, but these are few and far between.....
If you intend to un-install and re-install to your D: drive
Please install to D: first and test with the new shortcut BEFORE you uninstall
your program.......(be safe - be happy)
Finally, run defrag on your C: drive again and you will reclaim more space.....
The program I was refering to ***8 and others as such. So if I were to loose anything I have the CD...So Im not worried about loosing anything. Im just wondering if it would work? Im always safe and always happy!
I defrag to when as necessary! could say Im a fraggle...lol..
Im finding out via reasearch that by partioning that it wont regain speed that Im looking for - whats your thoughts? I figured that if I could clean out some of the more dragging programs that it would help out with speed.
Whats with all the partioning ? Your drive seems already to be partioned.
C: and D:
just re-install some of your progs to D: and reclaim the space from C drive.
The program itself will let you know if it needs the c drive.......
Another good reason for putting your programs on d is that in the event
of an operating system crash or losing your c then you can reformat c reload windows without losing your d progs.
Oh David please forgive me - its just a new word I learned! Im still learning here so Im not going to use the proper words and Ive read too much and understood too little!..lol
From what I got from the partion thing is something about creating 4 different areas to keep the load off of one area..
but Ill take some time and try out adding some of the **** Ive got onto teh d drive and see where that gets me...thanx hon I do apreciate your efforts!
Pleasure is all mine kate......keep things as they are and only move to d drive when your happy........lol
aye aye fellow major!...I dont like to move too quickly when it comes to the puter...and ive just recently gotten my hummingbirds back so Im..busy?...lol..sitting as still as a tree on my back patio awaiting that certain shot! lots of ginger tea and patience!....lol
thanks again!!
