Thread: publishing question

Hi all, have not been here for a long time.

Just wondering if there is a quicker way to publish your pages? and not by having a faster broadband service. On my site I show videos, and for a video that is something like 4 to 5 minutes long, it takes about half an hour maybe longer to publish. So, is there a quicker way? Has Blue voda updated since I last came?

Hi, this is not really to do with BV or VH. You need to do some research on types of file formats that will get the KB's down so you can upload quicker & also let the visitor see the show quicker.
Any image will always slow things down, especially video.

Well my videos are all wmv. I thought that was the quickest format, plus if I do find one quicker, wont the quality of the video be at risk?

Try down loading this bit of free software LINK
Then take one of your files & convert it to flash & see what you think of the results & file size in comparison to what you had.
Its a handy bit of screen recording kit as a bonus.
I think you have to have your file as AVI to start with.

About that Flash Link, I was wondering now in order for someone to see the video though, wont they have to have flash player on their system? If they do not have one, will it guide them to wear they can dl it? I know about anyone who has a computer has windows media player just not sure if they have flash player.

Most people should have flash, as so many websites are built or have a part of the site with flash now days, it would be unusual for a user not to have it. Most of the BV tutorials are flash.

OK, Well I clicked on that link and it is showing a few different files to download. How do I know which one I need to Download or if I need them all in order for the program to run?

Hi, as far as i know it wont work? the file should be in a flash & not media style of box as its been converted. The flash is just above the media box in BV.

Collectors info, I converted a wmv file to avi on AVS video converter, but when I selected it in cam studio nothing happend.

Collectors info, I can hear the sound of the video playing, but I cant see anything, plus the box does not come up with all the options.

Sorry to post again, but I tried one video that I converted to flash and it was 100 mb, whereas before on wmv it was about 13 mb, I thought you said flash would publish quicker.

Right, some of my videos are not working when they were before. When there were working I was using the windows media player box on the left hand side in the website builder. Due to quicker publishing, I switched to the link option which takes you directly to windows media player. Some vidoes are working in the link option, but others are not. Does anyone know why this might be?

without seeing your pages, we can only assume that a) you haven't uploaded the video or b) you haven't applied the link correctly, - maybe just a typo or something ..

But I have uploaded the videov LadyEye, I double clicked on the navigation bar, and go to "browse for file", then double click on the video.

and if you are referring to this video listed below (which is the tygressvslioness video on the page .. then you can see below that there is a problem with the linking applied to this video .. there are spaces in the name cause the % symbol to show in the link, etc., as well - it appears this link says the video is located in MY Movies

- So you need to be certain of the directory you have published this tiger vs lioness video to ...

The link needs to be exactly relating to the location of the video and the name of the video ...

Okay ...

I think you want all of your movies into a folder by itself and this folder is called My Movies. - I would rename this folder mymovies or my_movies ..

Use all small letters and no spaces between the words unless they are joined together with the use of the _ underscore symbol.

I think that you should rename your videos as well, and give them simpler names without spaces ...

for instance use tigressvslioness1 or tigress_vs_lioness1 - as opposed to Tigress vs Lioness - you need to either use an underscore symbol to join words together or do so without using spaces ...

Whatever you do, it needs to be the same ...

Once you rename your folder, then rename your videos .. I would then upload my videos to public_html/myvideos folder via the ftp method

Once all videos are uploaded into this myvideos folder (which is inside of your public_html folder) I would then change the links on my page for each video ... (not the page name or the page link itself, that is fine, only change the links to the videos on the page for each video)

The link would look like this ...

If you want to omit the separate folder for your videos and just upload them to your public_html directory with their new name ... then the link would just instead be .. http://www.interspeciesconflictvideo...vslioness1.wmv

You see if you upload the video into a certain folder you created then the link needs to reflect the same - and the same hold trues for the name of the video.

If you remove all those spaces from the links you will have a much cleaner link - some are working but your link is not as nice as it should be, lol .. nice to keep them clean and easy ...

See how you get along trying this ...

If you like, you could go into your control panel and delete the movies that you already have there so that you won't confuse yourself, lol, that is what I would do .. and start fresh ...

Your movies look great and they seem to load up okay, no real time delay.

Please click the links I have made here and look in the address bar as you click them to see the full url ... they get abbreviated here and you cannot read the entire url ... so be sure to click and look what comes up in the address bar ...

To start with I just tried the Brown Bear vs Siberian Tiger video. I made the folder "faceoffmovies", and changed the video file to bear_vs_tiger.. I then opened the FTP manager, made the connection, then draged the faceofff movies folder into the public html folder. Am I going right so far?

hmmmm .... keep in mind that you do not need to create a folder for every video .. you don't want to do this ...

- Now I am not sure where it is you created this folder, but if this is a folder that now is in your public_html directory then this can be the folder that holds ALL of your videos ..

So assuming that then, let's do this now ...

faceoffmovies will be the folder that contains all of your videos .. this folder now is in the public_html folder right? Well that is where we want it to be .. now you have one video renamed and is called bear_vs_tiger - correct .. now if you have uploaded that video into this faceoffmovies file folder - you should be able to find it by this link

So if this is correct and is working ...

Now all you need to do is rename your videos and upload all of them to the faceoffmovies file folder .. and then apply the link the same as above for all of them ... the only thing you would have to change for each is the name of the video ..

I'm getting a little stuck. Should it look something like this?

You are getting close ...

the faceoffmovies folder should be inside the public_html folder - it should appear in the same location where you see your index page, and any other page, and any images etc., that you have published to your website .. look for those files and move the faceoffmovies folder to that location ..

should look more like

ftp://75.126.124.164/public_html/faceoffmovies

and then the videos will be inside of the faceoffmovies like you have the one video ....

So you can move folders around

go into control panel, file manager - then move faceoffmovies into the public_html directory ... your video should go with it

and then publish or upload all your videos to the faceoffmovies folder ...

I think you've got it now ...

It's weird LadyEye, when the face off movies is actually in the public html folder, when you double click on it the bear_vs_tiger file is not there.

Okay, no worries .. you are getting there .. (the bear_vs_tiger video may not have moved)

Now you need to take each of your newly named movies that are on your computer and upload them via the ftp method into the faceoffmovies folder ...

By using the FTP method I take it you mean by highligthting the bear_vs_tiger video, then going to to either "move to" or "copy to" and then save the video into the face off movies folder?

Hi ....

You now have a folder ready to upload your videos to ...

This folder is faceoffmovies and is in your public_html directory - which is the folder for your domain.

Now you will want to upload all your videos to this very folder called faceoffmovies

to do so via ftp

open up your blue voda webbuilder
go to tools
go to ftp manager
go to connect
once connected - on the right side of your screen find and double click the file folder named faceoffmovies - remember this is or should not be inside public_html folder
then on the left side of your screen click through your folders until you find all your movies
when you find your movies, take each one, one by one and slide it over to the right side of the screen into the faceoffmovies folder ... (you will see them go over)
once you have placed them in this folder apply the new links to your pages for the videos and republish the pages ...

the links will be http:// followed by

yourdomainname.com/nameoffolder/nameofvideo.wmv

What do you mean by apply the links LadyEye? I thought you just click on "browse file" and then double click on the video you want, and then it's done.

So when you go to this page and click watch bear vs tiger - your video will show ...

You are supposed to be uploading your videos to your account via the ftp method as opposed to inserting them all on the one page since you were having problems publishing the page with all of the videos on it at once...

so instead, you are uploading your videos to your newly created folder and then you are going to apply the link to each video on the afo page and any other pages you have on the go for videos ..

Well I did that LadyEye and they are still not working. I typed in the navigation bar properties dialogue window, in the URL bar.

And my movies are in the faceoffmovies folder in the FTP html folder.

remember the name of the video has to be identical to what you type for the url .. I noticed some are .avi and some are .wmv - be sure you have that correct for which movie is which ..

Here you go. You cant see all of the link because it's to long, but I have definatley typed the "http://" correctly.

Okay, I see what the problem is - your faceoffvideos folder that you created and your video bear_vs_tiger.wmv are not in the correct area

Here is what you need to do:

Delete the following that you see in the screenshot

1. faceoffmovies folder
2. bear_vs_tiger.wmv

Please be careful and DO NOT delete public_html folder or you site will be gone .. so pay particular attention to be sure you don't accidentally do this ..

Once you have deleted those two folders and are looking at the same page as the screenshot showing us - do the following:

1. Click on the yellow folder icon of the public_html - this will bring you inside of the public_html directory
2. Once inside - create a new folder called faceoffmovies
3. Once that folder is created, click on it's yellow folder icon and go inside of the faceoffmovies folder
4. Once inside of faceoffmovies choose upload and upload your videos inside of this faceoffmovies folder.

Think of it as three stackable boxes:

First box - (public_html) - open it up and find 2nd box (faceoffmovies) - open up 2nd box and find the prize (bear_vs_tiger.wmv)

Okay .. and then once your have this one movie bear_vs_tiger.wmv in place and working, then upload all of your other videos to this same place with their new names you have given them.

Still no joy LadyEye, I dont think we are ever going to get them to work.

Right, it's working when I click on the link in the control panel, it;s under where it says "file URL" with the address you told me to write, but it still not working on my site.

aha! Yes, I noticed this as well ... and here is why ...

on the first link .. for the bear and tiger video you have

interspeciesconflictmovies - instead of interspeciesconflictvideos

Also ... as you apply and adjust the links on these pages with their new names of the videos - set the target to _blank - then the movie will open in a website page of itt's own, otherwise when they stop watching this video and close the page your site is lost ... you won't want this ..

Well not everyone agree's LadyEye with the outcomes of the Animal Face Off virtual arena fights, but on the bear vs tiger one, the bear had a decent size adavantage over the tiger, that is why the bear won.

the only reason the first video on your afo page wasn't working is because the link says tiger vs bear and the video is named bear vs tiger ...

See that link above - that needs to be changed on the afo page to say bear_vs_tiger.wmv instead of tiger_vs_bear.wmv (since you renamed, right)??

and then that will work ....

So - you were going to rename all your videos correctly, you were uploading them to this new directory - face off movies - you were then going to change and reapply all the links on your afo page and the other page - you were going to set the target to all these new links as _blank, so that the video will open in a new window for you .. and then you were going to republish those pages you made changes on ....

There is one other thing LadyEye. You know the tiger vs python video? It seems to cut off about 20 sceonds before the end. Do you know why that might be?

hmmm ... will have to see that one in action, but off the top of my head I am wondering if this is one that you converted? In which case, sometimes those free converters do not give you the entire show, they do cut off about this amount .. or perhaps it is taking so long to come through you think it is finished before it is??? Will have a look when you get that done and see if we can figure that out ..

LadyEye, the other videos are not working now, I know how to sort them though, but it's a right pain. Why is it that they were working without having to go into the public HTML folder, but now they are not?

Changing the name of the videos, uploading them to different areas of your site .. any number of reasons ...

the important thing is to get them all renamed properly, upload them to the correct directory and link to them correctly ...

Just like your socks, you hve to find them dependent on which drawer you placed them in .. you won't find them in the bottom if you placed them in the top ..

It's all a basic filing system to retrieve your items ...

Firstly they are found in your house (your house being your domain) then next they are found in the top drawer (the top drawer being the folder you created called faceoffmovies) and the socks being your videos (bearvstiger.wmv)

But Tygra ... there is much you need to do .. I have a checklist prepared for you if you would like to email me and I will send it for you .. too much to put on here .. but some things you can work on ... contact me via one of my sites in my signature if you want me to send this along ...
