    Question Publishing Pages

    Hi folks

First post on here and pretty new to the whole website building experience!

Have built up the pages of my site this week and it is now ready to go live on the internet.

I watched the tutorial re publishing and it was very helpful. I followed it step by step and BlueVoda advised my site was sucessfully published. However when I type in my domain name (which is www.auchinlecktalbotfc.com) it shows just an index page with a list of images and text pieces. Why does it not show the layout which I designed etc?

My domain name is purchased through Namesco Ltd and I contacted them this morning and asked them to update my DNS as adivsed in the welcome to Vodahost email I recieved. It did say in a box that this may take 12 to 72 hours to complete.

Is this why my home page displays as just a list of objects?

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance

    Stef

Hi.. open up that page you have called home, rename it index and publish this page as index ... each website needs to have a page entitled index, named, saved and published as this ... your domain has propogated so this should fix this issue ..

Also - its important when naming and linking pages that they all be lower case, no spaces between words unless the words are otherwise joined together by the use of the _underscore symbol ... if you get into the habit of this you will find the pages you publish and their urls more easily.

You will note with this url, although found, http://www.auchinlecktalbotfc.com/Ta...me%20Page.html

it makes for a very messy url and isn't formatted properly ...

this page should be renamed index and published as index

Although you do not have any other pages published yet, or maybe you do not have any .. all other pages should be named, saved and published, lower case.

That worked, for this first time this week I have smiled regarding this website!! I can't thank you enough!!

Now I follwed the process to link the pages together, but when I preview the page in my browser the pages come up with error 404?

For example, I have linked the History page but it does not work. Any ideas where I am going wrong?

    Thank again!

Excellent, glad to hear it ... good luck with the rest ...

just remember - lower case, no spaces, small relevant words for page names .. apply the exact page name for the link .... match things up, makes for a perfect game!!

    Cheers!

Ah yes, and this is taken care of differently than naming and saving your pages ..

if you right click on your page, and choose page properties you will see a tab entitled General - you will see where you type a very relevant title for your page .. this is different than described above as I have said ... this is what your visitors and the search engines will read .. so it's important for each page title to be as unique as your pages .. so write some good content .. you can safely write about 12 words or less there ... under the metatags tab, you will write some good keywords here .. those that pertain to each page and then you will notice page description. Make a nice write up of what the page contains in this section .. think of how someone might find you if they do a search .. but make sure this information is also written on your page .. keywords should be written at least three times on your page in order to officially be a keyword ... remember, each page is different ...

you are welcome .. good luck :)

Thanks once again, I will give this a try.

We made the pages by creating the home page and then cloning all the other pages from the home (index) page. To link the pages do I have to go through every page and do it, or is there is quicker wa of doing this?

Try republishing your page again .. have you copied a shape and then changed it .. or have you copied a menu bar and then changed it ... sometimes this will happen if you make changes on something you have copied .. once you copy something you shouldnt change it,you should instead insert a fresh item when you want to change things ...

    Cool Re: Publishing Pages

You stated above that you cloned all of your pages from the index/home page. It looks to me like some of the information from other pages is piling up on the pages, causing blurring and muddling of the pages. JMHUO

    Thanks for your kind replies.

Yes I did clone the home page to create other pages so they all appeared the same in terms of layout etc. Could this be what is causing the problem? And if so am I going to have to redesign all pages?

No cloning good and the best way to create your pages. What Ladyeye was saying is that you may have added a shape, menu bar, or another element to a page , copied it to another page and made changes to the it. This will cause it to change unexpectedly on the ohter pages. You should always insert a fresh element for each page (do not copy and paste). Otherwise it could have just been a problem when it was publishing the data, try republishing the page and see if it takes care of the problem.

Hi, and thanks for your reply.

Ok I will have a look at the original pages on BlueVoda and see if I can see if I have used any shapes etc.
If you go to the team page on my site (which touchwood, still works right now!) the black background I created by drawing a rectangle, filling it in black and then putting images text etc on top. Would this be classed as a shape? This shape would have been modified as it was part of the originally cloned page, and each page on the site is different in length so I did adjust the size of the rectangle on each page.
It is my history page which concerns me. When you go to this page, instead of showing the black background tht all pages should have, its a yellow colour which looks like the colours have ran, for lack of a better explanation.

Thanks again for everyones help. Last night these troubles were really getting to me :(

When you mentioned I may copied an element...

We have an old website and I copied the history text from the old website and pasted it into a text box within my BlueVoda page. Then just changed the font, colour etc. Could this be having an adverse effect?

Yes, that is classified as a shape and since you changed it after you copied this is having that effect on your pages ... if you copy something, you need to leave it as is .. in the case of shapes made with blue voda ... if you are gonig to change it, then you need to insert a fresh shape ..

Ok I am in the process of working through the pages, putting in new sections where I may have edited anything that was copied then edited.
Published the index, history, honours & team page. The history page loads ok 1 minute then not ok the next. Why is this happening? Im soooo confused!!

Have got the team page loading successfully, but the menu down the side (where the buttons are) should be black like the home page. On the team page this section appears all streaky yellow. I have replaced the black section and saved it. Still the same thing is happening :(

Hi ... you have got the same things going on ...

I really feel you need to start again ... fresh menu and one menu that is the same on all pages .. you still seem to be changing your menu, team is in one position on one page and then in another position on another, this is the same for almost every menu item you have ... this will be very confusing for your viewers and yourself, it will be very hard to fix broken links...

my advice, plan your page names, make one menu for all of your pages, get the correct links for these pages working correctly in the menu ... then copy and paste this menu using this method file > edit > copy > paste ... onto all of your pages, this will place the exact menu inthe exact same position on all of your pages ...

sorry about the bad news, but you will be thankful and your viewers as well when you have succesfully completed this - the agony you are going through now will be relieved...

    :)

    Thanks for your reply.
The index page was set up first and then all other pages were cloned from the index page then information added into the middle section of each page if that makes sense. Would the cloning not ensure all the pages should have been the same?
When the pages are on BlueVoda the menu is the same on every page, it is only when i publish it jumps about. And it does not do it all the time, just sometimes. And sometimes it is ok on my laptop but when my sister views the site, different pages jump about on hers and yet display fine on mine. I really am confused.
Is there really no other way to repair this problem than to redesign the whole site? This site has taken over my life for the last 10 days and to start again would be soul destoying :(
    Thanks again for helping.

Just redesign the menu .. meaning to do this

take the menu and any shape behind the menu off of all of your pages.. take one page..make a menu that works .. then copy and paste that to all of your pages .. either way you will spend a great amount of time fixing this .. so I really do, unfortunately, express for you to start new .. if you had cloned and the menu was fixed at the beginning of cloning, then yes, all would have been good, but this is not the case or at least not what I see.... so what I advise is your best remedy to correct your situation .. lots of tea and crumpets and smiles as you work on your site .. :)

One other idea for you is to create a text menu instead of using navigation buttons, because you have so many pages these buttons take time to load as well..you would be better off with a simple text menu, done by typing in the menu name and then linking as you would text - highlight the word, type inthe url for the page name .. you might consider some sort of divider between sections as well .. keeping about 7 text menu items in each section, will be easier on the readers eyes ... a divider can be a simple rectangle shape, small...

I can just about cope with having to re-do the menu on all the pages. I notice sometimes the colour of some pages looks as though they have "ran" and got all mixed up. Why would this be? Is this to do with the menu bar?

    Thanks again for all help.

This is due to changing the shapes from one page to another ... as in their colour, their style or their size..

just remember - if you are going to copy something, it is exactly that - an exact copy, once you change it, it is not the exact copy

when published, blue voda names these shapes as images, so it has a name, you go changing it on your webpage, the image doesnt know what to do, it conforms to the size on that page but it's trying to stick with what it was, oh gosh, that is the easiest way I can put it for you ..

This has to do with copying and pasting and then changing .. so you can't do that..if you copy, keep it the same - same goes for the navigation bar menu, you cant have that button say home one page and then team the next page, things just wont be called to your page that way ... needs to be conformed and standardized for best results....

Would you like to build the site for me??? Wishful thinking on my part haha! Thanks for al your help, sure I will need much more!

Think this is the only problem I have at the mo, touchwood!!!

You guys & gals have been great with all your help. Hugely appreciated. I may now get to go to bed same day as I got up!

What you relly mean is called your page titles, to change them you need to right click on a blank are of your page (away from all elements) choose page properties and type in the title of the page. Choose something specific to each page that best describes the page. This is also where you add your meta tags.
