When I navigate to one of my web pages by manually entering the address, the browser can only find the page if I add .html at the end. Am I doing something wrong when naming or publishing the pages? Surely it should not be necessary to add .html?

Yes you have to add the pages extension. If you don't have an extension it would be classed as a directory & the internet will auto look for an index page as a starting point for any directory.
