Generating traffic to my website

My website has been up and running for awhile now. I am listed on Google and other search engines. I do not sell anything on my site. It's more of an informational site for recipes and for people to post their own recipes.
I would like ideas as to how I can improve my sites traffic and ranking.
And also about backlinks.

Read up on SEO, page names, page titles. and pay per click.

Just in general, Rod Harper says

1. Large images should have alt text.

2. Make sure all img tags have height & width attributes.

3. The terms used in the page title should be found somewhere on the page.

4. Make sure all keywords are on the page if they are in your keyword tag.

5. Treat each page as it is the home page. Together they make you stronger.

6. Each page should have its own title, description and keywords.

These are but a few points to start with.

Back links are links back to your site. You do this by submitting to directories.. blog posts, forum posts, social bookmarking, link trading. Its time consuming. Be careful about too many PAID back links, as google tends to see this as an attempt to stack artificial rank.

Ever been heard about Edward and Angela's backlinking technique.
