  • Removing Dead Links Question

Hello all, I have been cleaning up my old pages and it seems like I am still getting hits from bots to dead links and directories.

    /phpcal/day.php 431 -
    /robots.txt 217 -
    /phpcal/view_d.php 128 -
    /phpcal/week.php 118 -
    /phpcal/month.php 47 -
    /Eventsgallery.html 17 http://www.saludoscompay.com/scschedule.php
    /HJ2010links.html 5 -
    /phpcal/install/index.php 5 -
    /phpcal/login.php 5 -

and then some, but I am trying to figure how to see what links are pointing to these sites. I am not sure if these links were cached. Are there any tools out there that can help out for doing traces on links? Or if you have another idea, that will def help.
    Thanks,
    Stratis

    Re: Removing Dead Links Question

Goto your cPanel >Awstats>[scroll down] Links from external pages.

Top right hand corner of link article select "Full Page".

Click on the Ip address or page links and you will be taken
    to the link page.

    2) While you are doing this and checking the pages, check also all the unwanted links like ******, 24hrs cigarettes, casino, sex and phornogaphic blogs etc., which are using up your bandwith. Collect the domain names or IP adresses of these unwanted links and enter them in "cPanel>IP Deny Manager". It will deny them access to your website.

      Great advice!
Have done 90% of it but could not find the "IP Deny Manager" option. Where is it in the Cpanel?

      Thanks,

Thanks Zuriatman, that is really good to know.
NZBR It is in the Security Section of CPanel second one in from left on mine. You have an horizontal list running down CPanel - 'Files' then 'Logs' then 'Security'

          Thanks Sandra.
And how important is to do that? How often should we do it?

You should do it on a regular basis every time you open your Awstats.

The thing is...I get the info and go there and place the wed address to block it, but keeps coming a message saying: "Sorry the IP address or domain" field can not be left blank"

                  Sorry Generallismo,

It still wont work. I encountered a number of instances where the same message appeared until I found a way to overcome the problem.

                  Try adding:

                  "www." before the domain name.

If it still does not work:

Add "http://www." before the domain name.

Generally just by adding the "domainname.com" will work most of the time.

                  "sub-domain.domainname.com" can also be banned.

                    Re: Removing Dead Links Question

                    If all the above failed!

Copy the "domainname.com" and goto this site:-

                    IP Tracker........

Paste the domain in the box and obtain the "IP Address" and
                    ban the IP address.

                      Thanks a lot! Working now.

                      2 questions:

                      1) What's the problem of having these sites (in my case a few porn sites from Russia!) visiting our sites?

                      2) If we don't do this 'clean up' what's the harm? Any damage with the SE's?

                      Cheers,

It is all up to you. If you think these type of adult links is good for your family trype travel business. By all means you can allow them to use your bandwith.

You allow a few and soon there will be a few hundred of them.
