Most forum scripts have a link at the bottom for admins to login at. (Most that I am aware of only show the links if the user is an admin, so make sure you are logged in as one). Through the admin panel you can delete users, and edit their profiles.

if your using phpBB2 then Watch this http://www.vodahost.com/DemoDemo/php...n_edituser.htm do as they do for your then watch right at the end just before Voda clicks the submit button, in the panel above you will see a delet this user check this box before clicking the submit button, if the user had made any posts they will now show as guest but the user is now deleted.

THANKS A LOT! Finaly a way to get rid of this people from my name list.
I was deleting ony the posts. Once I delete them from the list can they come back? I guess they would change the name....
I guess it will be like a war to keep them away from my forum! I will have to check it every day....

Yes, it is a war.

Make sure that you set user activation to 'admin' so you can look at the profiles before you agree to activate them. It is a pain to do - one of my forums gets about 10 new registrations a day, but I've only activated one in the past month! I am afraid I don't let anyone register who has set the board language to Albanian, Russian or similar - I'm not against the race per se, but these seem to be where spam originates one. I also don't allow people on who list their interests as 'porn' etc! (and believe me, many of them do!).

It is a pain, and maybe some bonafide members don't get activated, but I figure they can always email the site if they really want to get on the forum and complain why they can't get set up.

Don't know why they are hitting one of my forums and not the other as the security is the same on both, but something must be attracting them.

Forum's are a lot of work - but worth it.

Hi Trish,
I hope it is indeed worth it.
In one of the forums ´vodahost´ was giving some tips about how to attract people to your forum. He wrote:

`Require registration to view attachments.
Changing your Unregistered / Not Logged In usergroup to NOT have access to view attachments can dramatically increase the number of new registrations you receive. It can also cut down on your bandwidth usage, since everyone in the world won't be anonymously linking to that neato video attachment on your site. To do this, go to AdminCP -> Usergroups -> Usergroup Manager and edit the Unregistered / Not Logged In usergroup. You'll see a setting called Can Download Attachments; change this to NO. ´

I´ve asked how to do it, but so far I had no reply. I know it´s an easy thing but after trying everywhere I simply can´t find it, or don´t know how to start it: How to go to AdminCP? Then>>>usergroups>>>usergroupmanager.....
It´s not a matter of loging in as the forum adm. because this option is not available on the right board, is it?

Many thanks,

That's a vBulletin feature, it's not available with phpBB.

Ram....

You have a phBB Forum....log yourself in, then at the bottom click on the Administration Panel Login....(you will need to re-authenticate yourself).

Once you are in the Admin Panel, go to CONFIGURATION and then enable the visual registration (to stop SPAM auto-registering)...click SAVE/SUBMIT at the bottom.

Next, in MANAGEMENT go to LOOK UP USER and enter an asterik (*) as a wildcard, which will then show the first name of the entire membership list.
You will have to go through the entire membership list manually deleting all the previously registered users to eliminate all the SPAMMIES.

Since you are using a basic board, there is no simpler way to do this (and since you have over 1700 Registered users, I imagine it is going to take a good 8-10 hours for you to accomplish this task).

If you delete them, and have done nothing to prevent them coming back, then youve spent alot of time to do nothing. They can come right back and register again. Faster would be to ban their ips, and email addresses. If you note they are coming from certain email address, you can ban with *@rr.u and ban the whole domain of email addresses at once. If you run a google you can find a list of most common banned ip addresses as well.

When and if you get a new one, go to their profile and deactivate them rather than delete them, and this way they cant keep signing back up. Also there are a couple of good mods out there to configure and add to your forum to keep them from signing up.. then.. you can do daily work to kill of the spammers you got. Chances are they dont KEEP posting after the inititial run.

Banning isn't going to do anything.

Your only method of preventing the spam is to prevent them from signing up (testing whether its a human or bot).

95% of the spam is coming from bots.

IP bans won't work because they are going to use a dynamic ip address, when they come back its going to be a different IP

Banning the email isn't going to work because the bots have virtually infinite amount of emails they can use.

There as better CAPTCHA systems you can install on your forum, Humanizer, etc. This will produce better results then bans will

I can definitely vouch for what watdaflip is saying, as aliensdude installed this mod for me on my forum - blue voda chat .com and I have 0 spam in 6 months, so I am happy :) ...

Being familiar with him and his situation I was clearly trying to keep it simple by FIRST making sure his deluge by bots was dealt with (as shown above).

All the extra advice is great, but kinda overkill here.

Is it that slow in VT nowadays? LOL
(Looks like everyone is pushing to be first in line....lol)

To true, the only way I found how to block bots was to add a VIP code in to the script of the forum.
User's have to go to my main page and look for the VIP code and enter the code before submitting the forum to join, another security point to make sure Admin has to activate the user before he can post.

You can download the VIP code here www.youngstroke.org.nz/myvipcode.zip it's worth the time and hassle from bots. Once downloaded open with txt. notepad

To stop email spam try adding a bad bot trap to your web pagers it'll take a bit of time to set up but is well worth the hassle here is a ink to view about bot traps

http://danielwebb.us/software/bot-trap/

Hope this is of some use to you.
