Impossible, the world is full of evil people with an internet connection, you can not stop them spreading their venom, the only thing you can do is to make sure that you are the best at what you do and that your products and services excel above and beyound your competitors. I would have to disagree when it comes to forums being a place to make money. The only type of website that can really benefit from marketing in forums, let alone get away with it, is directories. I see a lot of new directories announcing their launch in forums. I also use forums to find new directories to submit my website to.

Somehow this has not been overly abused yet by directories. I think this may be due to the fact that most people build informational websites and not directories.

I have to agree that forums are an EXCELLENT way of promoting yourself.

Forums do not only sing praise about your products/services (that is of course if they are good) but they also show your potential customers that you have NOTHING to hide. Just seeing that a website has a forum section can ease the doubt that many potential customers may have.

I fully agree with Brad and Eric, put more energy into your products/services rather than using your energy to attack a competitor.
