    Default The Closet Monster

When you were young was there a closet monster that was always going to eat you if you left the door open? Were you scared of it so that you daren't get out of bed? I was.

I remember when I was very young, probably about 4. The radiator in my room used to gurgle over night, not constantly, just once like the heating had just been switched off or something like that. That was my sign that if Ididn't go to sleep then the closet monster would soon come and get me

Stephen King once said that he knows the monster under the bed isn't real, but as long as he was careful not to let his leg hang outside the covers it wouldn't get him. (I can't remember the exact quote, it was far more eloquent!)

Kind of sums it up, doesn't it?

Closet doors get me too - one night when I first lived alone I woke in the middle of the night to see the wardrobe door in the moonlight opening all by itself with attendant creaks. I absolutely froze, heart in my mouth, until my cat who must have been trapped inside, trotted out and jumped on my bed! Nearly had a heart attack!
