    Default Veterans Week Nov. 5 - 11, 2006

It's time for us all to wear our poppies in remembrance of our veterans.
    Feel free to copy mine.
I thought you all may be interested in this story from Nova Scotia. It's true and the story is on the page I created.

Terry Kelly is an ordinary guy. But the challenges presented to him and the path of life he has chosen are by no means ordinary.
When Terry was seven years old, his parents made the emotionally difficult decision to send him from his home in St. John’s, Newfoundland to the Halifax School For The Blind. It was not easy for either Terry or his parents, but the difficulties initiated Terry’s quest for challenge, developed his love of life and nurtured his musical talent. Terry learned to play the accordion, clarinet, guitar and piano; was a founding member of a very successful high school band, The Stringbusters; and was an active student. Terry joined everything going; Boy Scouts, hockey, track and field, karate and the student council. Always busy, he worked his way through Saint Mary’s University performing in clubs and bars with the popular rock group Janus, while studying for a degree in psychology.

Here is his remarkable song dedicated to the Veterans.

Windows media player .... I could not find a direct link to his song in full, so made this page to share.

Wow...how powerful that is! Thank you ladyeye. Would you mind if I use your link to send out an email to all my friends and family to view this video and take 2 min. on Friday at 11 for silence? I could link to Terry's site, but you have done such a wonderful job on this page, can you keep it online for a few weeks?

Certainly Cindy ... I wouldn't mind at all ... I may even add to it, as I had a very tasteful veterans page last year on my site, "Year of the Veteran 2005" ... so I would be honored for you to do that ....

I am sure we will see the entire board lit with poppys by Nov. 11th ....

Let's just say that I was one of Oliver North's snipers playing games with the Sandinistas when nobody knew we were even there....And no, although I had rank, I was not one to go career (I did my job really well, I learned what I needed to learn about myself, and then it was time to move on).

Funny, I thought it was a holiday wreath....most poppies are yellow, aren't they? I will stick with quietly observing and honoring the traditions.

Sniper.... cool .... so you have a keen eye and plenty patience

Sorry, no the image is a poppy, hmmm..... maybe a different one is needed to portray the image better.... they are worn on the lapel on Nov. 11th and the days preceding, they sell everywhere here and the price is a donation, normally by Legions, Red Cross.

The golden poppy the state flower of california

The poppy of wartime remembrance is the red corn poppy

Live and learn. (I knew about the state flower)

Keen eye, Lady Eye? Yes....for many things.
Patience? I dunno.....gave up teaching Elementary Autistic kids because I had no patience for the parents' BS.
Enjoy an oversized office and spacious living because I have no patience for BS.
Have fewer good friends nowadays because I have no patience with BS.
(Kind of makes you wonder if "BS" means "Besides Self" doesn't it? LOL)

The last time I had real patients was when instead of playing doctor as a kid I ran the neighborhood clinic! LOLOLOL

Been holding off on the yacht....don't I need a first mate???

I do however, have my EYE on a 110' Lazzara yacht (am friends with the Lazzara brothers out of Tampa), but I am waiting for the time not only to afford to buy it for cash, but maintain the crew and maintenence as well -- $3.5M + about $200K/yr. I keep hearing my mind say "Dream On, Big Boy! Dream On...."

That's a large yacht and surely a huge dream too, nice.
Those yachts visit our ports regularly .. shall I start watching, lol
Perhaps if you thought a little smaller, your dream may emerge quicker ...

The poppy is the United Kingdom's (and a few other countries including Canada) way of remembering their veterans and civilians killed hence "Remembrance Day", Armistice Day and of course Veteran's Day here.

Ironically, it is the flower of the opimum plant. I think it was someone from Canada that first wrote about the poppy fields and war.

    In Flanders Fields

By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-191

    Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. Here is the story of the making of that poem:

Very important day indeed! Our family has never disrepected rememberance day. My Grandfarther served and defended the English colonies of Hong Kong. he was eventually captured by the Japanese and died of starvation. My Grandmother never did remarry, holding on to the memories of him until she was 84 years old. The 11th day the 11th hour is when Canadians salute our fallen veterans.

No, unfortunately I wasn't able to go. The Parade was a great success. My son's troop was the 2nd in line courting the Grand Marshall Vets, etc. It was 27 degrees outside, but no snow. Now it has warmed up to 54 outside...a wonderful day to celebrate!

I've been waited on hand and foot for the last few days, how exciting, lol .... and went for a very long walk with my doggy and my friends doggy today, two dogs are better than one, lol, tangled ropes, and interesting when meeting, a shephard, a jack russell and a very large poodle, lol, we all survived and the entire neighborhood was "sniffed" out ... lol ... that was about the extent of it.

Sounds like a great time and probably a much needed rest! I use to have a Jack Russell. He started jumping the fence, so I gave him to my middle sons inlaws. Now I have two wonderful Golden Retreivers.

When we go for a walk....well let's just say, they ususally take me for a walk! Great Dogs though...I love um...

Both are males. The one on top is 3 years old the one on bottom was only 8 months when this picture was taken about 4 months ago. Now, they are both pretty much the same size. The older one (Dobe) has long hair and the younger one (Casa) has short hair. They play really well together, but they are a handful, when I let them in the house. They are MAJOR ball players. I have to keep a bucket handy at all times!!

Yeah I noticed the long hair, short hair.... Didn't take long for Casa to catch up eh! Now if you could only get them to be "Major League" players you'd have it made. My Lady would be content if I rubbed her with my feet 24/7 ... at times she will just hover over my foot, not move, just stand there, just so long as my foot is on the floor beneath her she is content, it is the funniest thing, and she won't move ... kind of an attachment I think, if she is hovering over my foot, I can't move...
One is enuf for me though, two today was overkill on the street .... lol

That is funny!! My husband pets the dogs and the cat with his foot. So whenever they see him, they become so submissive and lie down at his feet, for their belly rub with his foot. He is allergic to animals and can't pet them with his hands, so it's always with stocking feet. They just charge at me with open arms and mouths. Give them food a ball and a good hand pat and their in heaven! Goodnight and give your lady a kiss for me!!
