Default Am I the only one?

    Who does not like christmas?

    1. The whole meaning has gone out of it.

    2. People are pressured into spending money they have not got.

    3. I usually put on about a stone in weight.

    4. We see people once a year and pretend how excited we are to see them.

    5. The radio is full of those awful christmas songs.

    6. Trying to go shopping is like being in the middle of a riot.

    7. It starts earlier and earlier so people can make as much money as they can out of it.

8.Ohhhhhh theres loads more, sorry for all christmas lovers but it really is the worst part of the year for me.

hmm For me, the "magic" around this time of year has kinda gone. Everything linked to Christmas like frost in the mornings, the Cola advert on TV (lol) blah blah blah... But on the day its cool because I get to watch my niece be all happy with gifts and stuff. But you are right, it is getting earlier every year. The xmas songs are great though so yeah lol.

I have to agree with you Karel! For these and many more reasons. Don't even talk to me about the songs! I spent 3 weeks of December 2004 in Hong Kong, Beijing and Singapore ... the ONLY music I heard was Chrismas songs - sometimes with chinese lyrics, but the same old tunes. And people in santa outfits and decorated trees. And somehow I couldn't believe that the Chinese people as a whole are now celebrating Christmas in the sense that I understand it...

And then of course, the whole red suit and white beard thing ... in South Africa, where it happens to be high (hot!) summer at the time. Sweaty Santas everywhere!

    1. The whole meaning has gone out of it.

I believe everything meaningful revolves around how it means to you. If you still believe in the true meaning of christmas, it is up to you to stand by this, your beliefs are something that cannot be taken away from you freely. Remember, stand by what you believe in, do not falter or cave in to peer pressure. Isn't that what we try to teach our children?

    2. People are pressured into spending money they have not got.

Pressured by who? Most people would tell you, "If you cannot afford it, please do not do it". This spending is for the moment only. The moment can be enjoyed in other ways. The real pressure to spend comes from within ourselves. Again, isn't this something we try to teach children?

    3. I usually put on about a stone in weight.

That's usually the fun part though isn't it. Again, only inflicted by our own self doings and the lack of restraint. lol .... Isn't January fun in attempting to get it off. What else would we do in January, have to prepare for "Sweethearts Day" ...

    4. We see people once a year and pretend how excited we are to see them.

This I can relate to. I agree, if I have no time the rest of the year why must I go through the tradition of seeing these folks. But if you looked at the other side of it. Are these the folks that you never ever want to see? Would you want to go through life never seeing them? Doesn't christmas bring those days that at least a yearly visit warrants the fact that you do know them? Perhaps we should be happy that they do not bother with us for the rest of the year ....

    5. The radio is full of those awful christmas songs.

Try listening to these .... lol

The Twelve Pains of Christmans - Bob Rivers
Twelve Days of Christmas Bob & Doug MacKenzie
The Arrogant Worms - Things are Looking Bad for Santa - funny too!
The Arrogant Worms Santas Gonna Kick Your Ass - too funny

    6. Trying to go shopping is like being in the middle of a riot.

True, although there are a ton of other alternatives, internet shopping, September shopping, home made presents, gift certificates, cash, - preparation is the name of the game..

    7. It starts earlier and earlier so people can make as much money as they can out of it.

No doubt about it, it has become very commercialized. But again, we the human beings, respond to this form of advertising which lures up into spending money. Really, we are our own worst enemies.

8.Ohhhhhh theres loads more, sorry for all christmas lovers but it really is the worst part of the year for me.

You are really not alone, but you are the only one who can make a difference for yourself.

I actually just let the whole thing pass me by, my partners family are still very much into it, so I have to keep a smile on my face and go through the motions. I know it is their own fault but so many familys get into debt and just can't afford to pay it back, these people making all the money don't care. It is the sad side of christmas and guess which couple of months will be the busiest time of the year for my site?

It sort of hit home when my partners daughter asked for her christmas money last week "Well I am getting it anyway, so why can't I have it early" There was the real meaning of christmas to her, it was not a gift, it was like we owed it her.

And she is actually not a bad child for her age, just a sign of the times.

Yes Karel ... that is so very true ... and I would totally guess it would be a very busy time for you ....

We really need to take hold of ourselves, perhaps more advertising about being less commercial could possibly heal the future ... it has to happen at some point ...

To be truthful, one of the worst things I find about Christmas is figuring out what to buy ... seems you buy every darn thing you need all year long, or when you need it ... so then to just spend for the sake of spending at christmas just doesn't make sense ...

I would certainly join any group that was on the go to make people realize and not feel guilty about spending what they do not have for Christmas ... this would give me great meaning and purpose ... it's just so unnecessary and all stems from self-guilt ... or keeping up with the "Jones" ...

It has to start from us. I would like to see a New Tradition Started for future generations for sure! Because two days after Christmas, the amount of gifts or money spent, just doesn't mean anything anymore and that is just another sad side of it .....

Should try to enjoy Christmas ...... someday you may look back on it and wish you enjoyed the good times, forget the bad, do what you can and be happy with that. Besides it hard on the other people whom you love, when you don't cheer up.

Anyhoo, that's my two cents.....try and have a good one.

    Take care

    oh and by the way

Default Re: Am I the only one?

    Here's my take on Christmas:

    1. The whole meaning has gone out of it. The meaning of Christmas is a religious meaning that I never really had. For those who are very religious - I hope they have kept what it really is about in their hearts. I always felt Thanksgiving was my favorite holiday and I use Christmas to do the same - be grateful for all that I have in life.

    2. People are pressured into spending money they have not got. Spending money on others has always been easy for me - but spending on myself is very difficult. Since I start Christmas shopping at the beginning of the year - I rarely have any shopping to do after Labor Day- I buy things as I see them for people. Now, I have less and less people to buy for - so those close to me sometimes get a good stash - cuz as I travel through the year, if I see something that I know they'd like, I buy it. I do not believe anyone should feel the HAVE to buy anything if they can't afford it. For a long time in my family we had very small limits on amounts that could be spent - to protect those with less money. And a friend's family only allowed gifts made from things already somewhere in the house - it's amazing how inventive people could be - and how much more some of those presents meant. I used to purchase stockings for anyone that I'd spend Christmas Day with - and loved getting little goodies for them. Rarely cost much - but everyone loved them.

    3. I usually put on about a stone in weight. Now now, that must mean you're enjoying some good food! And it's up to each of us to control what we eat (yea, right Beth) And I'd help you gain - as Christmas season is usually when I make my homemade fudge - and it's defininitely a weight gainer.

    4. We see people once a year and pretend how excited we are to see them. Long ago I put a stop to seeing people I won't be excited to see. If you aren't excited to see them - find someone else or somewhere else to spend the day.

    5. The radio is full of those awful christmas songs. I used to own at least 15 Christmas cd's - they were stolen along with about 500 cd's from my storage locker. I love them in measured doses. And when my measured dose is over, I can change the station -

    6. Trying to go shopping is like being in the middle of a riot. I've never cared much for shopping but unlike most of the world - since I don't NEED to buy anything at Christmas time, I occasionally go to the stores just cuz I enjoy seeing everyone rushing around and I don't need to :)

    7. It starts earlier and earlier so people can make as much money as they can out of it. Actually, it doesn't seem to help stores that it starts earlier - but I do so hate seeing Santa and Christmas trees up before Thanksgiving. I ignore them. Now, though, needing to optimize on line- I realize I have to be thinking Christmas around the 4th of July.

8.Ohhhhhh theres loads more, sorry for all christmas lovers but it really is the worst part of the year for me. I'm sorry it's a bad time of year. But like I believe is said elsewhere in comments here- and like you say in your OWN book - we feel how we ALLOW ourselves to feel. So, you can allow yourself to be depressed or upset by the time of year - or you can live your life to it's fullest. I CHOOSE to live my life as if every day is my last - and love each day I wake up - whether it's Christmas or a non-descript day - I'm glad to be alive and kickin' and causing a fuss. And on the rare occasions I allow myself to feel self pity I look at my dogs and they again teach me how to stop and smell the roses like they do every day.

Default Re: Am I the only one?

    1. The whole meaning has gone out of it.
I use Christmas as a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. That was what it was intended for and because I am a person of the Christian faith, that is what we celebrate in our home. So for me...the meaning is there, always has been and always will be. So to say, "The whole meaning has gone out of it", is a feeling you have based on your life and environment. Ponder this quote for a few minutes: "Nothing means anything...until anything means nothing." Just food for thought. The meaning of Christmas? FAITH

    2. People are pressured into spending money they have not got.
Not me!! Like I said...I celebrate the birth of Christ...not Santa Claus and presents. So in our home, if we have extra money and feel like buying someone a gift at Christmas...we do. If we don't have the money (which we don't this year) then we just celebrate being with friends and family...no gifts or we make something. I always tell my adult sons....the best gift you can give me is a long handwritten letter about your favorite memories growing up. I have received those as gifts and every years handwritten letter is a little different. I couldn't receive a better gift than my son's expressing their love of life! I also do the same for them. The meaning of Christmas? LOVE

    3. I usually put on about a stone in weight.
So What? and I mean that lovingly!! So you put on a little weight. I have been in countries where people die of starvation. Be thankful that you are in a position to put on a little weight. If it bothers you, then help someone who is hungry put on some weight. The meaning of Christmas? BEING THANKFUL FOR WHAT WE HAVE AND HELPING OTHERS!

    4. We see people once a year and pretend how excited we are to see them.
And your point is???? If you have the ability to make someone else smile even if it's just once a year...is that not worth the effort? Don't think about yourself and how you feel, but instead think about others and what you can do for them. The meaning of Christmas? HAPPINESS AND JOY TO OTHERS!

    5. The radio is full of those awful christmas songs.
OMG!! And what is the problem with this? Some of the best songs ever recorded are Christmas songs. Full of Joy, Love and Meaning! Every Christmas song I've ever heard has meaning to it...unlike other songs throughout the year, that I can't even understand, let alone try and figure out what they mean. As posted by leoni above, around the world, people from all walks of life and cultures come together to celebrate joy and peace. I think we need to play those tunes ALL year long! The meaning of Christmas? PEACE AND HARMONY!

    6. Trying to go shopping is like being in the middle of a riot.
I'm not much of a shopper, so I avoid all of that whenever possible. But there are times I do have to go out. How do I handle this? I put on the biggest smile I can find...I look everyone in the eyes as I pass them by and wait for them to smile back at me. I am not in a hurry. If I come across someone who appears to be rude or about to start a riot..I find it a challenge to be as nice as I can be. I love having a positive effect on people and knowing that I could make a difference. The meaning of Christmas? MAKE A DIFFERNCE IN SOMEONES LIFE!

    7. It starts earlier and earlier so people can make as much money as they can out of it.
Or....another way to look at it....It starts earlier and earlier so that we can celebrate Christmas sooner and longer! I know people who celebrate Christmas year round...again...depends on what Christmas means to you. As far as people making as much money as they can...Is that a bad thing? Whether they make the money in October or December..so??? I say..more power to them and God bless them! If they have something for sale that someone wants to buy....regardless of when....I think that's a good thing! Let's celebrate the ability to make money!! The Meaning of Christmas? BEING BLESSED TO BE ABLE TO WORK AND SUPPORT OUR FAMILIES!

8.Ohhhhhh theres loads more, sorry for all christmas lovers but it really is the worst part of the year for me.

I do have to disagree with you on this, as you can see. Obviously...I LOVE Christmas and the meaning (s) it brings to me and my family. If I may suggest something to you. You might want to go back to your (1.) comment and try and discover a meaning that works for not only you, but for others in your life that you are close to. Concentrate during this time of year on all the good in your life and not the bad. Meditate or pray (whatever your choice) on how YOU can make a difference in someone else's life and take the focus off of you. It is truely amazing how it comes back to you.

MERRY CHRISTMAS (to those who believe in Christ).....HAPPY HANUKKAH (to my Jewish Friends)...HAPPY HOLIDAYS (to all people)

I just have to mention that I DO like Christmas songs, but getting an overdose of anything nice tends to put me off it for a while ... unfortunately a year isn't long enough these days to quite get over my dislike by October when they start bombarding us again. When at home I listen to my own cd's of course - but while travelling I have no choice but to listen to whatever is playing. If they would still play other music interspersed with Christmas songs ... or even, Christmas songs interspersed with other music, I wouldn't come out in a rash :-)

    For me it's

-Second a time to reload for the bussy season coming
-Third a time to go for skiing in the Alps and loosing the extra load of the December month.

Well I really have to say I believe Paul watched "Grumpy Old Men" the other night .... the sequel "Grumpy Old Ladies" was on last evening. It was a British Show and funny as heck ... and the idea of these shows was all about the battle of christmas ...

It was too too funny ... and the reality of it all came to light right from the shopping, stressed out not being able to get that "hot item" your children had on their wish list, driving madly from store to store because your friends told you there were two left, only to get there and they were all gone, - the office parties where the men were drinking and trying to get cozy with the girls who wore the tight dresses and high heels ***** that were killing them to the party, and all the hustle and bustle and then to try and cook this large turkey in a pan that you only needed once a year ....

it was too funny .... definitely shed a light on the "bah humbug" ....

I am sorry, no amount of 'Enjoy it and be merry posts' will make me enjoy this time of year. I just don't like it and no-one can convince me otherwise. I know very few people close to me who do.

But for all them who do enjoy it and like this time of year, then that's fine, we are all allowed our own individual views and feelings, its what makes the whole world more interesting.

    Santa's Bad Day
    The Birth of a Tradition
One particular Christmas season a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip, but there were problems everywhere. Four of his elves got sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule.

Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her mom was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven knows where. More stress.
Then when he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked, and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys.

So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of ***** cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered that the elves had hidden the liquor, and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider pot, and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw end of the broom. Just then the doorbell rang, and irritable Santa trudged to the door. He opened the door, and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree.

The angel said, very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't it a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?"
Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

    It smells good
    The foods are wonderful
Red and green are okay colors
At the very least, people are reminded to consider the idea of giving

    Christmas
    Subject: The Office Party
FROM: Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
    TO: Everyone
    RE: Christmas Party
    DATE: December 1

I'm happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will take place on December 23, starting at noon in the banquet room at Luigi's Open Pit Barbecue. No-host bar, but plenty of eggnog! We'll have a small band playing traditional carols...feel free to sing along. And don't Be surprised if our CEO shows up dressed as Santa Claus!

FROM: Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
    DATE: December 2
    RE: Christmas Party

In no way was yesterday's memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees. We recognize that Hanukkah is an important holiday which often coincides with Christmas, though unfortunately not this year. However, from now on we're calling it our "Holiday Party." The same policy applies to employees who are celebrating Kwanzaa at this time.

    Happy now?

FROM: Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
    DATE: December 3
    RE: Holiday Party

Regarding the note I received from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous requesting a non-drinking table ... you didn't sign your name. I'm happy to accommodate this request, but if I put a sign on a table that reads "AA Only" you wouldn't be anonymous anymore. How am I supposed to handle this? Somebody?

FROM: Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
    DATE: December 7
    RE: Holiday Party

What a diverse company we are! I had no idea that December 2 begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating, drinking and sex during daylight hours. There goes the party! Seriously, we can appreciate how a luncheon this time of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees' beliefs. Perhaps Luigi's can hold off on serving your meal until the end of the party - the days are so short this time of year - or else package everything for take-home in little foil swans. Will that work?

Meanwhile, I've arranged for members of Overeaters Anonymous to sit farthest from the dessert buffet and pregnant women will get the table closest to the restrooms. Did I miss anything?

FROM: Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
    DATE: December 8
    RE: Holiday Party

So December 22 marks the Winter Solstice...what do you expect me to do, a tap-dance on your heads? Fire regulations at Luigi's prohibit the burning of sage by our "earth-based Goddess-worshipping" employees, but we'll try to accommodate your shamanic drumming circle during the band's breaks. Okay???

FROM: Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
    Date: December 9
    RE: Holiday Party

People, people, nothing sinister was intended by having our CEO dress up like Santa Claus! Even if the anagram of "Santa" does happen to be "Satan," there is no evil connotation to our own "little man in a red suit." It's a tradition, folks, like sugar shock at Halloween or family feuds over the Thanksgiving turkey or broken hearts on Valentine's Day. Could we lighten up?

FROM: Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
    DATE: December 10
    RE: Holiday Party

Vegetarians!?!?!? I've had it with you people!!! We're going to keep this party at Luigi's Open Pit Barbecue whether you like it or not, so you can sit quietly at the table furthest from the "grill of death," as you so quaintly put it, and you'll get your freaking salad bar, including hydroponic tomatoes. But you know, they have feelings too. Tomatoes scream when you slice them. I've heard them scream. I'm hearing them scream right now!

FROM: Teri Bishops, Acting Human Resources Director
    DATE: December 14
RE: Pat Lewis and Holiday Party

I'm sure I speak for all of us in wishing Pat Lewis a speedy recovery from her stress-related illness and I'll continue to forward Your cards to her at the sanatorium.

In the meantime, management has decided to cancel our Holiday Party and give everyone the afternoon of the 23rd off with full pay.

We hope that this change does not offend anyone.

    I think Holly nailed it.

ANY Holiday worth celebrating revolves around heart-felt realities, and as Bethers alluded, they should be visible year-round.

Christmas is all about Love, Forgiveness, Redemption, and Hope.

Personally, I cherish these, and strive to celebrate them all year long in everyone I have chosen to include in my life, whether or not I can find parking or stand in line longer than usual!

Twas the Night Before Christmas 2006

Twas the night before Christmas and Santa's a wreck
How to live in a world that's politically correct?
His workers no longer would answer to "Elves,"
"Vertically Challenged" they were calling themselves.
And labor conditions at the north pole
Were alleged by the union to stifle the soul.
Four reindeer had vanished, without much propriety,
Released to the wilds by the Humane Society.
And equal employment had made it quite clear
That Santa had better not use just reindeer.
So dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid,
Were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid.
The runners had been removed from his sleigh,
The rust was termed dangerous by the E.P.A.
And people had started to call for the cops
When they heard sled noises on their roof tops.
Second-hand smoke from his pipe had his workers quite frightened
His fur trimmed red suit was called, "Unenlightened."
And to show you the strangeness of life's ebbs and flows,
Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose.
And had gone on Geraldo, in front of the nation,
    Demanding millions in over-due compensation.
So half of the reindeer were gone, and his wife
Who suddenly said she'd had enough of this life.
Joined a self-help group, packed and left in a whiz,
Demanding from now on her title was Ms.
And as for the gifts, why, he'd ne'er had a notion
That making a choice could cause so much commotion
Nothing of leather, nothing of fur
Which means nothing for him. And nothing for her.
Nothing that might be construed to pollute
Nothing to aim. Nothing to shoot.
Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise
Nothing for just girls, or just for the boys.
Nothing that claimed to be gender specific.
    Nothing that's warlike or non-pacifistic
No candy or sweet...they were bad for the tooth.
Nothing that seemed to embellish a truth.
No fairy tales, while not yet forbidden,
Were the Ken and Barbie, better off hidden.
For they raised the hackles of those psychological
Who claimed the only good gift was on ecological
No baseball, no football, someone could get hurt,
Besides, playing sports exposed kids to dirt.
Dolls were said to be sexist, and should be passe,
And Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.
So Santa just stood there, disheveled, perplexed.
He just could not figure out what to do next.
He tried to be merry, tried to be gay,
But you've to to be careful with that word today.
    His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground;
Nothing fully acceptable was to be found.
Something special was needed, a gift that he might
Give to all without angering the left or the right.
A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision,
Each group of people, every religion.
    Every ethnicity, every hue,
    Everyone, everywhere...even you.
So here is that gift, its price beyond worth
May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth.

Say what you will, but Christmas does give us, and all the little people,
something out of the ordinary to look forward to at the end of the year.

I think we'd all agree though, that it has become a bit too commercialized.

You don't have to participate in the commercialization. That is, if you
really want to let people know you think about them, and want to avoid
the shopping craze, then just let people know where you stand. You
might even consider making something to give instead of buying things
or just calling the people close to you and really wish them the best to
come and telling them that they are important to you. Wow, isn't that
    the Christmas Spirit?

You are so right Brad.......homemade gifts are the best!!!!

    My dear friends,

Somewhat embarrassing to admit, I'm not getting an annual bonus and Christmas is tight this year. I will be making bedroom slippers for you all as gifts. Please let me know your sizes.

You'll most likely agree that it's a splendid idea, and should you wish to do the same, I've included the instructions below:

    How to make bedroom slippers

You need four maxi pads to make a pair. Two of them get laid out flat, for the foot part. The other two wrap around the toe area to form the top. Tape or glue each side of the top pieces to the bottom of the foot part. Decorate the tops with whatever you desire, silk flowers (this is most aesthetically appealing), etc.

    These slippers are:
    * Soft and Hygenic
    * Non-slip grip strips on the soles
    * Built in deodorant feature keeps feet smelling fresh
    * No more bending over to mop up spills
    * Disposable and biodegradable
    * Environmentally safe
    * Three convenient sizes: Regular, Light and Get out the Sand Bags

I've attached a photo of the first pair I made so that you can see the nifty slippers for yourself....

Awaiting your response. It's crucial that I get the right size for each one of you.

There were two blondes who went deep into the frozen woods searching for a Christmas tree. After hours of subzero temperatures a few close calls with hungry wolves, one blonde turned to the other and said, "I'm
chopping down the next tree I see. I don't care whether it's decorated or not!"

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus
Editorial Page, New York Sun, 1897

We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:

    Dear Editor,

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

    Virginia O'Hanlon
Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!

    Wrapping Presents With A Cat

    1. Clear large space on table for wrapping present.

    2. Go to wardrobe and collect bag in which present is contained, and close door.

    3. Open door and remove cat from wardrobe.

    4. Go to cupboard and retrieve rolls of wrapping paper.

    5. Go back and remove cat from cupboard.

    6. Go to drawer and collect transparent sticky tape, ribbons, scissors, labels, etc.

    7. Lay out present and wrapping materials on table, to enable wrapping strategy to be formed.

    8. Go back to drawer to get string, remove cat that has been in the drawer since last visit, and collect string.

    9. Remove present from bag.

    10. Remove cat from bag.

    11. Open box to check present, remove cat from box, replace present.

    12. Lay out paper to enable cutting to size.

    13. Cut the paper to size, trying to keep the cutting line straight.

    14. Throw away first sheet because cat tried to chase the scissors and tore paper.

    15. Cut second sheet of paper to size by putting cat in the bag the present came out of.

    16. Place present on cut-to-size paper.

    17. Lift up edges of paper to seal in present, wonder why edges now don't reach, and find cat between present and paper. Remove cat and retry.

    18. Place object on paper, to hold in place, while cutting transparent sticky tape.

    19. Spend next 20 minutes carefully trying to remove transparent sticky tape from cat with pair of nail scissors.

    20. Seal paper down with transparent sticky tape, making corners as neat as possible.

    21. Look for roll of ribbon; chase cat down hall and retrieve ribbon.

    22. Try to wrap present with ribbon in a two-directional turn.

    23. Re-roll up ribbon and remove paper that is now torn, due to cat's enthusiasm in chasing ribbon end.

    24. Repeat steps 12-22 until down to last sheet of paper.

    25. Decide to skip steps 12-16 in order to save time and reduce risk of losing last sheet of paper. Retrieve old cardboard box that you know is right size for sheet of paper.

    26. Put present in box, and tie down with string.

    27. Remove string, open box and remove cat.

    28. Put all packing materials in bag with present and head for lockable room.

    29. Once inside room, lock door and start to re-lay out packing materials.

    30. Remove cat from box, unlock door, put cat outside door, close door and re-lock.

    31. Lay out last sheet of paper. (Admittedly this is difficult in the small area of the toilet, but try your best!)

    32. Seal box, wrap with paper and start repairs by very carefully sealing down tears with transparent sticky tape. Now tie up with ribbon and decorate with bows to hide worst affected areas.

    33. Label, then sit back and admire your handiwork, congratulating yourself on making good of a bad job.

    34. Unlock door, and go to kitchen to make drink and feed cat.

    35. Spend next 15 minutes looking for cat, before coming to obvious conclusion.

    36. Unwrap present, untie box and remove cat.

    37. Retrieve all discarded sheets of wrapping paper, feed cat and retire to lockable room for last attempt, making certain you are alone and the door is locked.

    38. At time of handing over present, smile sweetly at receiver's face, as they try and hide their contempt at being handed such a badly wrapped present.

    39. Swear to yourself that next year, you will get the store to wrap the darn thing for you.

Awe yes, the purrfect kitty ... but it is all about the "Mad Dog Rush" now ...

The streets are jammed with traffic, construction workers still haven't given up for the year to make matters worse, the cars that are parked on the side of the street feel as though it is their right to just pull out in front of you and then glance a mean look at you because you were too close to them.

The stores are literally ripped apart, ramsacked, and the cashiers hired to help with the demand have absolutely no clue, the younger generation operating these check outs are mighty calm though, why they move with almost no intention to do so, they literally have absolutely no stress themselves, or any idea that moving things so slow creates a larger line up and frustrated shoppers ... but they just continue at the same speed "slow" ....

Yes it's all about the "Mad Dog Rush" now ... the season is here.

Festivals held by other religions over the holiday season
    The Jewish Festival of Lights
Chanukah, or Hanukkah, lasts for eight days, beginning the 25th of the Hebrew month Kislev (November-December). It celebrates the victory of Judah the Maccabee over the Syrian tyrant Antiochus over 2100 years ago.
In 165BC, after three years of war, Judah won a decisive victory over the Syrians and returned with his followers to Jerusalem to reclaimed the Temple. On their return, they could find only one small cruse of oil, enough to last one day. But when they lit the temple menorah with it, a miracle occurred and the menorah burned for eight days. Since then, the Jewish people celebrated the success of the Maccabees and the miracle of the oil.
Each night of the festival, the family gathers around the menorah, a special candelabrum that holds eight candles. On the first night the head of the family uses a helper candle - called a shamos - to light one candle. On the second night, two candles are lit, and so on, until all eight candles are lit on the eighth night. Each night, gifts are given. In some families, children play games with a small four-sided wooden top called at dreidel. On each side of the top is one letter of NGHS, or Nes Godol Hoyoh Shom, which means "A great miracle happened there." Hanukkah means "dedication."
    Islam
Muslims around the world celebrate Ramadan, which marks the month the prophet Mohammed is believed to have had their holy book, the Koran, revealed to him by God. Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, being 11 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. The celebration starts at the first sighting of the moon in Ramadan. This year, Ramadan happens to fall over the Christmas period.
Muslims cannot eat and drink at all in the daytime during this period, breaking their fast only when the sun sets and again before the sun rises, sharing special Ramadan treats, such as Konafa, an Egyptian dessert made of shredded wheat and syrup, or Katayef, sweets stuffed with nuts. They also eat dates (iftar) which, according to Islamic teachings, were eaten by Mohammed at the end of each day of the fasting month. The days are spent in prayer and reflection.
The fast ends with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, the festival of the breaking of the fast. Some Muslim governments grant amnesties to political and other prisoners on this day.
    Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a cultural festival during which African Americans celebrate and reflect upon their heritage as the products of two worlds. It begins 26th December and lasts for seven days.
Kwanzaa was founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana "Ron" Karenga, a college professor and African American leader. He studied the festivals of many African groups of people and decided that the new holiday should be a harvest or "first fruits." Kwanzaa is a Kiswahili word meaning "the first fruits of the harvest."
    Hindu
The 25th December also is considered to be the birthday of the Hindu god, Krishna, as well as Mithra, the Greek god of light.
    Wicca
The annual Tree Festival, which had long been celebrated in Northern Europe before the Christian era, is still celebrated among nature-based faiths such as Wicca.

    Madmen
There used to be a Festival of Madmen on Christmas day, when servants became masters and masters servants for the day.

    Festival of the ass
In the Middle Ages, the Festival of the Ass was held on Christmas Eve, recalling Joseph and Mary's flight into Egypt. A young girl with babe in her arms entered the church riding an ass or donkey. During mass, all the prayers ended with "hee-haw." The Catholic Church banned the celebrations because of its sacrilegious character.

    A Dog's Rules For Christmas

    1. Be especially patient with your humans during this time. They may appear to be more stressed-out than usual and they will appreciate long comforting dog leans.
    2. They may come home with large bags of things they call gifts. Do not assume that all the gifts are yours.
    3. Be tolerant if your humans put decorations on you. They seem to get some special kind of pleasure out of seeing how you look with fake antlers.
    4. They may bring a large tree into the house and set it up in a prominent place and cover it with lights and decorations. Bizarre as this may seem to you, it is an important ritual for your humans, so there are some things you need to know:
    a. Don't pee on the tree
    b. Don't drink water in the container that holds the tree
    c. Mind your tail when you are near the tree
    d. If there are packages under the tree, even ones that smell interesting or that have your name on them, don't rip them open
    e. Don't chew on the cord that runs from the funny-looking hole in the wall to the tree
    5. Your humans may occasionally invite lots of strangers to come visit during this season. These parties can be lots of fun, but they also call for some discretion on your part:
    a. Not all strangers appreciate kisses and leans
    b. Don't eat off the buffet table
    c. Beg for goodies subtly
    d. Be pleasant, even if unknowing strangers sit on your sofa
    e. Don't drink out of glasses that are left within your reach
    6. Likewise, your humans may take you visiting. Here your manners will also be important:
    a. Observe all the rules in #4 for trees that may be in other people's houses. (4a is particularly important)
    b. Respect the territory of other animals that may live in the house
    c. Tolerate children
    d. Turn on your charm big time 7. A big man with a white beard and a very loud laugh may emerge from your fireplace in the middle of the night.
    DON'T BITE HIM!!

    Letter From Santa
    Dear Friends
I have been watching you very closely to see if you have been good this year, and since you have, I will be telling my elves to make some goodies for me to leave under your tree at Christmas. I was going to bring you all the gifts from the "Twelve Days of Christmas", but we had a little problem up here.
The twelve fiddlers fiddling, have all come down with VD from fiddling with the ten ladies dancing. The eleven lords a leaping have knocked up the eight maids a milking, and the nine pipers playing, have been arrested for doing weird things to the seven swans a swimming. The six geese a laying, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree, have me up to my ass in bird ****. On top of all this, Mrs. Clause is going through menopause, eight of my reindeer are in heat, the elves have joined The Gay Liberation Front, and those dumb Newfoundlanders have scheduled Christmas for the 5th Of February.

    Sincerely, Santa

Talking Re: Am I the only one?

I feel like the christmas scrooge when it comes to christmas as i would quite happily let it pass me by. I really don't enjoy it half as much as i used to. Too much stress, too much money etc etc.

I can understand doing it for children but when there's only adults in the family why is it neccessary to buy presents??? Why can't we just meet up have a christmas dinner etc but maybe instead of all buying presents just put some money towards the xmas dinner!?!?!?!

I really do feel quite pressured into buying at christmas as the rest of my family is really into it still and think christmas is nothing without buying each other a present.

Oh well it's come round so fast this year it'll be summer before we know it again. Ba humbug!!!! lol

It's just as you say, it's too commercialised. I'd be happy to take away all the **** and tackyness and just get back to the original christmas meaning. Being together, having a good time and forgiving.

No, not Scrooge to dislike the commercialization of Christmas, the hussle & bussle of things.

The meaning of Christmas is what you want it to mean.

In this thread, there are many different opinions on Christmas and what it should or shouldn't be, but as DreamLady said.....find and discover what works for you, and Bluegrass who also said....you don't have to participate.......

It's kinda sad when people can't find one thing to be happy about, and as Allstars says it is the one time a year that some people do make an effort to smile........so enjoy that little moment.

I am saying Happy Holidays each day, hoping that it may be a little moment for someone. Take care

    Dear Santa letters

    Dear Santa,
I wud like a kool toy space ranjur fer Xmas. Iv ben a gud boy all yeer.
    Yer Frend,
    BiLLy

    Dear Billy,
Nice spelling. You're on your way to a career in lawn care. How about I send you a frigging book so you can learn to read and write? I'm giving your older brother the space ranger. At least HE can spell!
    Santa

    Dear Santa,
I have been a good girl all year, and the only thing I ask for is peace and joy in the world for everybody!
    Love,
    Sarah

    Dear Sarah,
Your parents smoked pot when they had you, didn't they?
    Santa

    Dear Santa,
I don't know if you can do this, but for Christmas, I'd like for my mommy and daddy to get back together. Please see what you can do.
    Love,
    Teddy

    Dear Teddy,
Look, your dad's banging the babysitter like a screen door in a hurricane. Do you think he's gonna give that up to come back to your frigid, fat mom, who rides his ass constantly? It's time to give up that dream. Let me get you some nice Legos instead. Maybe you can build yourself a family with those?
    Santa

    Dear Santa,
    I want a new bike, a ***********, a train, some G.I. Joes, a dog, a drum kit, a pony and a tuba.
    Love,
    Francis

    Dear Francis,
Who names their kid "Francis" nowadays? I bet you're gay.
    Santa

    Dear Santa,
I left milk and cookies for you under the tree, and I left carrots for your reindeer outside the back door.
    Love,
    Susan

    Dear Susan,
Milk gives me the ****s and carrots make the deer fart in my face when riding in the sleigh. You want to do me a favor? Two words, Jim Beam.
    Santa

    Dear Santa,
What do you do the other 364 days of the year? Are you busy making toys?
    Your friend,
    Thomas

    Dear Thomas,
All the toys are made by little kids like you in China Every year I give them a slice of bread as a Christmas bonus. I have a condo in Vegas, where I spend most of my time making low-budget porno films. I unwind by drinking myself silly and squeezing the asses of cocktail waitresses while losing money at the ****s table.
    Santa,

P.S. Tell your mom she got the part.
    Long Dong Claus,

    Dear Santa,
Do you see us when we're sleeping, do you really know when we're awake, like in the song?
    Love,
    Jessica

    Dear Jessica,
Are you really that gullible? Good luck in whatever you do. I'm skipping your house.
    Santa

    Dear Santa,
I really really want a puppy this year. Please please please PLEASE PLEASE could I have one?
    Timmy

    Timmy,
That whiney begging **** may work with your folks, but that **** doesn't work with me. You're getting an ugly sweater again.
    Santa

    Dearest Santa,
We don't have a chimney in our house, how do you get into our home?
    Love,
    Marky

    Mark,
First, stop calling yourself "Marky", that's why you're getting your ass kicked at school. Second, you don't live in a house, you live in a low-rent, ghetto apartment complex. Third, I get inside your pad just like all the burglars do, through your bedroom window.
    Sweet Dreams,
    Santa

    "The Night Before Christmas"

    (A Visit From St. Nicholas)
    Clement Clarke Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
    Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
    In hopes that ST. NICHOLAS soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
    While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
    And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONDER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
    And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
    And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
    And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
    And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
    Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
    And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT."
