This was sent to me by my energy conservation buddies.. interesting ..

For those worried with energy consumption and all its downsides. When
your screen is white, being it an empty word page, or the Google page,
your computer consumes 74 watts, and when its black it consumes only
59 watts. Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that
would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the
huge number of page views. According to his calculations, 750 mega
watts/hour per year would be saved.
In a response to this article Google created a black version of its
search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the
white version, but with lower energy consumption, check it out...

Did alittle further research and found that this savings is realized on CRT monitors and not LCD monitors - but I think it is interesting nonetheless..
Also, the black is a bit hard on the eyes for some people..

Hi Liz, certainly different. Not sure I would like to use long term? But a good idea.
Look on the bright side! Flat panels run on about ½ the wattage. The only thing is I run 2 monitors. Will this make me an optimist or pessimist or just sitting on the fence with my greener side? lol

Two flat panel LCD's will still make you ahead of the game, and you can use the white one..

In fact, they run a Google custom search script to provide mirrored services to illustrate their protest to Google: tracking the number of searches and computing the energy savings is the "petition" they are compiling to influence at least the "graying" of Google's background......

Oh, I agree completely.
I am amazed at how deep-down I am so anti-Google......I see WAY too many instances where they trample rights, strive to monopolize, aggressively manipulate products and services (insert malware in "free utilities"), discredit others, (etcetera) and pretty much act as if they do not have to be accountable to anyone at any time.
Despite their overall contributions to the internet, their attutude taints the entire expereince, in my opinion.
