Thread: USA v UK Lingo

Hi all, i'm Linda and i'm in england uk, ive just joined vodahost n happy to be here, i thought maybe i'd post a little lighthearted thread ...hopefully it will make you smile and give you a break from all that web building ..:)

My fiance is American so i can vouch for these differences to the point that we've laughed till we cried and almost come to blows (not literally) over some of the misunderstandings they can cause ...

When we first met his face was a picture when i asked him if he wanted a fag...what!..being a cowboy from oregon...he wasnt to impressed...so here we started the explanations (english ..fag = cigarette)

Cookies you eat with milk, in the UK we call them biscuits..in the USA biscuits are scones and covered in gravy ...as i discovered to my horror....what no cream n jam?

USA ..jelly.......UK jam

USA..potato chips....UK crisps

USA..fries....UK..chips

USA ..bathroom...UK toilet this term can be very confusing for an american in the uk as most uk men dont say ..."i'm going to the toilet" ..they ..water the snake , have a jimmy riddle, water the pony,or even point the python!

Dont be shocked if the english guy in the office asks you for a rubber to correct a mistake ...he's asking for an eraser ...:)

True meaning = Girls

UK= Grass
True meaning = not a trustworthy person

US= Dude
UK= Geeezer

US= I pissed = Im angry
UK= I pissed = Im drunk

US= Boss
UK=Governer

I will ad more as they come to mind....I know few bad ones but
I can't post them here, I would have to delete and ban myself for
using foul lanaguage.

There's loads more - I thought I spoke the same language until I went to the States for a holiday and tried to book a hotel room and found myself booking 2 queens for a night!

Here's a couple for you....

Pants - UK = underwear, USA = trousers!
Purse - UK = where you keep your money, USA = handbag
and USA trash is just rubbish to us Brits

And of course, to top it all, only Brits know how to spell properly (colour, theatre etc. etc!!!)

lol ...nice ones , we've even had dissagreements over sausages , when we went out for breakfast and i was asked what i'd like ...i said ... bacon, egg n sausage....with a puzzled look on his face he said ...you dont have sausage with bacon.....i then asked for brown sauce ...shock horror lol
then comes the ordeal of how the eggs should be cooked i like mine soft but not runny (snotty).....in the end i gave in and just let Jack order and of course i had to have a good old english cuppa tea ....a tea bag cup of hot water and a glass of milk ...bless

Having said all that ...it was all delicious and your steaks oh my my my ..my mouth is watering just thinking about it :)
