Default First snow of the season

Well, it's another all nighter for me but who cares!!! Thank you mother nature (global warming or whoever you are), today we got our first CO snow storm and not just in the peaks!!! thus far it's about a 1/2 inch and pounding!!! What a great winter we shall have. I just threw my first snowball for the furry guy to catch... Perhaps I will start to wood stove and start make warm ale... I'm sorry but I'm like a child in a candy store when it comes to snow!!!

Move to CO! It's why I chose CO University over WA State and I stay for it!

It's 34 outside so the snow is a bit wet, not your CO powder snow, but it's really dropping now and the only time we have wet enough snow for snowballs until Nov comes around and no more snowball fight:(

We're are at about an inch now and it doesn't look like it will let go! I wonder if the Denver Boulder area is getting any. I'm up at 8200 feet just 16 mile west of Boulder...

Your next news update report after our drunken snowball fight!

It's really nice in the house (64 but I realize to my CA or FL friends this is winter - just had that conversation with a pregnant friend from CA that was blessing the cool 68 in her house at 8am before it rises - I do not miss that!) and we don't have any type of heat going, fire or electric. It slowed a bit but it's nearly 2 solid inches at my house. I have a few different measuring systems;) Henry, a 3 year old 94lbs all muscle (he walks or runs between 3-10k a day) White American Shepard is pooped out already from the little snowball fight we had aka catch - and he slept all night! I guess the serenity of a snow fall puts him in the mood to just nap... Too bad I have to meet a client in an hour;(

She has never seen it?! You know I own a pet service business... If that is true, never seen the ocean, I should report you to the Humane Society! Or the Animal police! Speaking of, it is true that they have laws in FL that little dog breed need to be in a cart and not on a leash?! I even have a client here (she lives 6 month here and 6 in Fort Lauderdale) that told me she is now begining to see cats in carts being pushed around to while they shop like little babies! What it the world coming to!

Henry's mom drives him to CA to feel the sea and the sand in his toes for experience/exposure and he hates it as much as me. Personally I think that's crazy since I hate the sand in my toes and other parts unless I'm surfing, kite boarding, free diving, snorculing, or yachting. I avoid sucba nowadays but that's for a different private post lol. All I'll say is military. night. underwater. hours. no fun!!!

    I forgot the snow report!

It was a little less than 3 inches at 12.30pm. It's stopped for a bit and the sun melted quite a bit of it while i was at my meeting but now it is snowing again steadily and has already filled up what the sun took away. Feels like it will continue into the night. it's looking very dark in the skies...

Thanks for reminding me. Today's report: More snow but with the sun peaking in ever so often, the roads are pretty dry but the ground is still white. It's beautiful now with the Aspens at the peak of their gold phase! With the snow it's a sight not witness in years!

As of 4:20pm, getting cloudy again...

I'm sorry you had to move back SChajin, but now that your are not poor... say goodbye to your current life and start here lol;)

Can you tell I'm a CO promoter?! I should contact the State for some commissions!

Nights here are in the 30's at about 9pm. Going down to Boulder in the AM's all bundled up only to layer away clothes. It's like having two seasons in a 24 hour period; winter at night and summer during the day. It requires a backpack to store the heavier morning attire lol!

I've trained a few dogs to cart. Mostly Bernese and Newfoundlands since they have carting competitions. back in the day those breeds would cart those huge wheels of cheese blocks each weighting over 100lbs to help the farmers. They need to be comfortable with it, not so easy on other breed (my white shepherd who is perfect in any new situation I put him in, does it for a little bit but hates it), and need to know to obey directions (left, right, and so on).

A good cart can be expensive but if you really want to give you pup more exercise and a feeling of satisfaction/accomplishment without hurting her with improper harness/cart configuration or adding too much weight, get her one. She'll be really pleased to do it and please you! But first test it out first to see if she is ok with it (it's an odd feeling to have something heavy and bulky strapped to your back especially active playful breeds) and get your vet's approval. Don't forget to ask him how much weight your rottie can carry with a 2 wheeled or 4 wheeled cart.

here is all the information you did not want but got anyways! ;)

Ha Ha... Trust me she wouldn't want to please me that much! She prefers to sit in the pool, then take a long nap..Her giant feet have not been on pavement very much, it might hurt her..Just dreaming however.

Are you sure you she's a rottweiler? Sound like a Hilton princess lol. Maybe you should get her a cart to sit in rather than haul like the smaller breeds you see being pushed in baby carts in FT Lauderdale lol;)

I was actually referring to her pleasing herself not you. She's a working breed, when they get a job, what I call "doggie employment", they are satisfying their own innate instants to "work", to please the leader and the group, and stay out of trouble thus became a healthier, happier, part of the group.

How old is she? Sounds like 7-8...

She is 4 1/2 but she's a little on the large size..LOL Most of the time she won't even go for the ball! When we had the Dobie she would play, but we lost her..She cried for over a month for her friend. I want to move to NC for the mountains and I will get her a friend then..

You mean the hills of NC?! Unless you mean NC to be North Colorado, than you'll be a little closer to real mountains;) Having a new puppy will do her good. Rotties are not always ball crazy but again, it's a personality issue not breed. Why should princess run when she has you to get her her things while she lays by the pool keeping your paws "white" sipping on canine margaritas lol. I wish I was treated as well as many dogs out other... They have the life!!!

As for the snow update. It's in the 60's here and high 70's in the Boulder/Denver area. everyone is driving up the canyon to check out the Aspens.

    p.s.

Doggie margaritas is a kick ass invention! I bet it FL and CA will be good markets for that! We don't have many pools in CO;) I am copyrighting this post.

Sometimes I miss the scorching 120-130 degrees running drills with full gear and long sleeve cotton shirt (NOT rolled up- stupid military rules) but then I remember the humidity and cold showers that were never cold enough!

I used to live somewhere with a relative humidity averaging 100% with temps rarely below 100 for a few months during the summer - and it never rains in the summer there so no relief - you step outside and you feel hot, uncomfortable, and sticky smelly. Every little move you make requires sweat to pour out from a new area yet discovered by science.

So what about a humidity index update? here it is ZERO! It may actually be more since air has H2O in it but is it so little it's not worth measuring.

The way I measure humidity in the AM is I grab a pile of snow, sqeeze it, then blow it or throw it in the air. If it doesn't stick it's going to be a beautiful powder day for the backcountry. If it sticks a little, it's a good day for the back side of the resorts. if it turns into a snowball, I stay at home and let the tourist have snowball fights in the afternoon slush.

How do you measure humidity, heat, or cold?!
let's run with that until it snows again;) We are starting the wind season - today's winds are reaching 60mph - not many people know this but the mountains get a lot of funnels and tornadoes, it's just that they are so far from most people they are not mentioned. Longs peak clocked 218 mph winds!

They are calling for 3 inches in Denver which should mean more up here but who knows with them, they are horribly wrong most of the time. The last 3 foot storm last year they didn't even know was coming until it hit us! I love those surprise! Maybe they should just stop reporting the weather... Would save air time, and lots of money;) What do they do in FL? Make a recording for the summer and repeat it? Sunny, hot, and humid, what else could they report?! jk

It's snowing now! 29 out side - 56 inside. When I get home from a group walk and a run, in the snow, I will start a fire. It will bring it up to an uncomfortable 80+ inside.

Well if you live in the mountains... one side is like desert and the other is fertile valley. When these air masses converge it makes for unpredictable weather.. just like lake front weather up in the great lake areas. Storms pop up out of no where. Same reason you have cloud bursts in the summer that causes flooding.

Group Walk? You need a group to walk?

Cool Re: First snow of the season

A breezy (not really) 93 here with a wonderful heat index (not really) of only 102. Time now (it gets hotter later) is 3:48 pm...Yeah and we have some systems (that is what they call them) brewing...I call them almost hurricanes!

I have a pet service business so I do quite a bit of dog walks. It's more economical for the owners to have their dogs walk in a group. They get a longer walk for less cost, and the dogs get to socialize which is very important, and I get more cash than I would a private walk. Everyone is happy;)

I have a few courses regarding weather and avalanche as I do a lot of backcountry skiing and a few heli-ski tours and teach snowboarding and skiing - I have a client that hires me as a heli-guide twice a year so I need to know all about the weather and avalanche reading. You are absolutely right Karen! I live right where the chinook starts before it hits the valley. In the winter, 6 mile south of us, the jet stream is the closest to Earth. Just a fact but it doesn't really influence much. Most storms here are easy to predict because the conditions need to be perfect with a Low coming from NM and a High from UT/WY or it will miss us because of the geography of this location.

It's starting to dump harder now! this group walk and run is going to be fun! I can't believe I need my spikes in October!

That's funny SChajin, seems global warming is a bit confused. We are getting record cold days while it seems it only gets worse for you. This year was the first time in recoded history that it didn't reach 90 in NY!

It snowed a little last night (about 1.5 inches) but it also reached 11! Now it's 21 but feels like -10 with the winds. Way too cold for Oct.

it's crazy that the difference between here and FL it 90 degrees, a temp that never even reached that high up here...

The old timers are saying this is how winters use to be around here so we are expecting a really good snow season but cold... If the cold gets to well below 0 for about 7-10 days it will kill all the pine beetles that are destroying the woods and slowly making their way here. Dillion/Silverton are completely brown!

    Hello Guys,

Oh yes, autumn is passing by and winter chills are already felt here in Finland (although it is still autumn season).

On some areas, roads are having what we call black ice which is very dangerous for the traffic. A few accidents happened already.

We have changed into spiked tyres for safety.

Some snow in Lapland already even though very minimal up to now.

I like winter because the surroundings looks beautiful dressed in white (snow). By the way we are using degrees centigrade here so it could be very cool when it is on the minus, let's say -20. One could feel like burning on the face already.

We have been using F but if you'd like to share your extreme temps in C just let us know so some of us won't get confused:)

Ha! It was colder in FL than in CO! In Denver it's 75 now but was higher earlier and where I'm at it's 59! Colorado weather is wacky. Winter one day, summer the next.

They are calling for snow Wed. We'll see how accurate they are... back to winter in a few days;)

    SChajin:

Do you like teddy bears, flowers, and random colorful shapes on your sweater?!

BTW, I didn't have time to report a little snow we have last weekend - 2 inches that disappeared the next day so not worth the excitement.

Right now we have about 2 FEET of snow right now and it's still coming! Started late afternoon yesterday. They said 18 inches in the weather reports, I'm estimating 3 feet with a max of 3.5 feet possibility. Let's see if my intuition beats the meteorologists;)

Never measure the height of the mountain you're climbing. At the summit, look back and see how small it really is!

Sorry I have yet posted but yes, it was a nice storm! We got 30 inches but now with the 40 mile winds some areas are bare while others have drifts reaching probably 8 feet!

btw, no one here complains about snow or delays, most Coloradans I know are snow lovers and play sick to hit the slopes (management and owners alike at times even take employees to the slopes as "sick days" - it's an unspoken rule here, no one will tell you no when it's great snow and some management even suggest it! Great for moral and employee retention) except Denver born people:) They aren't too fond of the snow and some have yet to enjoy the snow sports as adults. Go figure that one!
