Chris,
I recently transferred 400 pages on a client's site from html to php and after a couple of weeks of Google accepting the changes I too have noticed a slight increase in SE position for this site. I am not saying changing from html to php made the site go up a notch, I also reoptimised the site as I was changing it so could have been an influence too. Just pointing out that it certainly doesn't seem to harm a site.
Don't aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.
Ah! Nice one guys. It sounds like the SE's dont take long to catch up with the sites changes then.
Just redirect the old pages to the new if you can and it wont take them long at all.

Ah! didn't think of that, (well done) was worried about the page names staying the same & being in the same directory. But forgot about the extension changing from html to php & being able to leave the old ones in place. Would just have to lose the html index page.
Cheers.
