  • PageRank info needed!

    Hi all!

For those who are in the higher page ranks I have a simple question??

Does anybody know when page ranks are updated ??? Monthly, weekly biweekly or what?

I finished putting my website on the web and will start looking for links from other websites. However, I've seen some websites with good PR (3-4) but don't have much links from other websites. Is this a result of a good onpage optimisation ??

I was also wondering it my main page should get a higher pagerank at the next google update because I gave it much more importance. Any details on how this exactly works would also be appreciated !

    Thanks

    Re: PageRank info needed!

Google does page rank changes when they feel like it - approximately 3 times a year now.

Some places get good ranking just because they are considered an authority - and they got that because of how they are perceived by other websites - who choose to link to them. This happens because the site is worthy - sometimes without good SEO - but good onsite and offsite SEO is the key in most cases of getting good ranking - and the key to getting placed high in searches.

You really don't need to concern yourself as much with your rank as you want to with getting placed high in searches.

      Alright thanks for that!

I really thought pagerank was a huge factor in ranking high in search engines. I guess then the key for ranking high is getting links from other websites with the right anchor text where you will include your keywords.

For Google page rank is very important. One of my keywords I target is Soy Candles. At the very top is this one candle company with a horrible looking and optimized page. They got to the top by paying to advertise on thousands of different sites using their keywords as anchor text. If you do the same search on yahoo or msn this page isn't on the top ten. Google themselves will tell you that a good part of there ranking is based on pagerank.

PR has no bearing on your serps (search engine ranking pages). If I had to choose between the two I would pick serps any day. Serps is what brings you the traffic not PR.

PR is updated daily and is processed throughout the google database about every 3-4 months. This is the period when your new PR is updated. In addition if your site has never been "jaggered" some people call it the "google dance" this will occur at the same time.

PR, jagger, and serps are important topics to learn if you plan on having a successful website. The best ranking websites are the ones that look very simple to the eye and the source code is very opitimal.

I'm curious pet121... can you give us more detail on this google dance called jaggered? If someone outside of BV mentioned jaggered, I would have to guess they meant how old and haggered Mick Jagger is looking LOL

              Re: PageRank info needed!

Jagger is google's answer to deal with spamdexing mainly. Spamdexing is just that spamming the google's index. Some unethical webmaster use seo techinques that violate policies and guidelines set out by google. Some people just lack the knowledge or time to even look at these guidelines. Ignorance and failure to do so will eventually catch up to you.

Most SE's look for such things and this is not only subject to google.

These techiniques come in many forms, hidden text, doorway pages , link farms, keyword stuffing, deceptive description tag ect...

A jagger update is basically a algo run to check sites for such things. During this periond pages disappear only to reappear. Sometimes the page will disappear all together if jagger finds the page is spam.

If one of your pages does dissappears give it a week to 3 months for it reappear. If it doesn't come back google has just penalized your site.

Google likes a clean index so when visitors do a search they get the correct results. If I search for "fishing Lodges" I expect to get relevant results. Ever run a search on and land on a page totally unrelated to what you were looking for? Perhaps you clicked a link and you are redirected to a porn site? This is spamdexing.

Although jagger is not 100% fool proof it does reward sites that follow their guidelines.

BTW: many new webmasters tend to only concentrate on appearance and fail to go beyond. I hope this answers some of your questions. Jagger is a huge topic to be discussed. But if you desire to learn more try a search for "matt cutts jagger".

                Re: PageRank info needed!

Jagger is actually the older Google update - Google likes to name their updates and are on to another name now. Google had the Jagger update in Oct of 05 I believe - then the next update was Jagger 2 - ones after that have names without Jagger in them.

Matt Cutts is a Google employee and his blog is a fascinating read -

A new site will often be placed in "the sandbox" by Google - it is not a penalty - it's waiting to see if the site stays around and how it does. Pages don't disappear altogether unless the site gets banned - however they might drop in the listings or move up - based on how well the site is developed.

                  <~~~~ Dragging out soapbox!!

Its as I keep saying!!! Do the basics well, learn them and steer clear of anything that is JUST for the search engines or what the latests SEO fanatics CLAIM will get you 1st page rank or listing. Chances are it wont last. When you are stuffing KEYWORDS into your site, like inappropriate title tags, alt tags and lists of locations etc etc. ask yourself if its for the convenience of your customer or to improve your page rank and doesnt make any sense other wise!! If it doesnt simplfy navigation, assist your viewer in some manner then dont do it!!

Ok.. stepping off the soap box! Dont make it any harder than it has to be. Learn good practices from the start! You will gain headway over the long haul and wont suffer the up and downs as heavily or be penalized in the long run of things.

Hi... So if one has placed metatag key words in the page titles repeatedly throughout their site would that be considered stuffing?? Hummm. Thanks Doug

                          Doug,
Your question is very confusing. First, meta tag keywords are, by definition in your meta tags - and not really paid any attn to be se's any more. If you mean using your keywords in your page titles, you should do this - but you should do EVERYTHING so it looks and is good for your USER - and every page title should be different to reflect what's on that specific page. And if you're doing your job properly, the title will automatically be using keywords that are important to your visitor (and thus the se's also.)

Thank you Dori I wish I had more time to explain things. Jagger was indeed created back in late 2004 while a few google engineers were meeting in Vegas. A brainstorming session on how to rid google of spam. Matt Cutts being the one with the least experience amongst them got the honours of Jagger being named after him.

Currently they are working on Jagger3. I will be back soon I hope.

Google just did another update that many of the SEO community are calling "Big Daddy" .Many of the keywords I track are all over the map. It was mentioned several times recently that Google had run out of server space and the problem cannot be fixed by just adding more servers. Google is shaking things up again with their algo.
