  • Still unsure about hyperlinks

I do not have an account yet so i cant test my work. so i have a question to ask about hyper linking my web site pages together
I am having trouble understanding what your linking too if its a destination on your own site. for example: if i make a page on my web site and right click on the back ground of that page. go to the "page properties" then on the "general" tab enter in a title. for example "my-page/about.html" do i then set the about button's hyper link to http://www.my-page.com ? or do i hyper link to what i save the file as? the tutorial is confusing me

any help would be grate, i would hate to have built my site and then have to completely redo all my links

also another quick question i haven't seen answered is, what if i want the FIRST page some one sees on my website to be a small flash clip or small wmp movie, and then after the clip ends load my "home page" for visitors to explore my site. what should i name that page? is that the "index" page then?

    Re: Still unsure about hyperlinks

The title of the page is what shows in the top of the browser window - it is not the name of the page. For example, if you look at the top of the browser window now it starts with "Still unsure about hyperlinks" - that is the title. Each page you should title with the best short description - using your best keyword phrase for THAT page.

Now, your page name is what you save the page as. So, if you save a page as about - then that page becomes http://www.mysite.com/about.html

The home page - which you simply save as index - will become your http://www.mysite.com - you don't need the /index.html after that - just after the other pages.

(And I'm assuming here that you're going to save your pages as html - if you are saving them as php - then change the .html to .php

If you want the first page to the the flash or movie - THAT is the page you'll name index - then you'll give another name to the home page.

      Re: Still unsure about hyperlinks

Thank you for your quick response!
let me recap what you told me to make sure i understand.

When i save a page i was working on, the name i save it as becomes the name i use to hyper link. so if its saved as "art" then its http://www.mysite.com/art.html correct?

another question i have is what about the "index" aka "home" page then? obviously my website wont be called "index" so where do i put in the http://wwwMYSITE.com info? is it what i saved my title as on that page? so for example if i saved the title of my "homepage" as "super-online-store" would my link to my "about" link look like this... http://www.super-online-store.com/about.html correct?

My last question is : if i where to make a clip in flash as my "index" page. and made my home page after the "index" page. how would linking proceed? for example: the flash clip plays on my "index" page that i named http://www.super-online-store.com then links to the "real" homepage where some one can navagait my site. and i SAVED the page as "homepage" (seen how its not my index page) would the link then look like this? http://www.super-online-store.com/homepage.html correct? and further more if i then made an "about" page would the link to it look like http://www.super-online-store.com/homepage/about.html correct? or not?

thanx again, and i hope you have patients to answer the following =)

ps. i have been saving my pages as .bvp should i be saving as .html instead?

        Re: Still unsure about hyperlinks

Read back to my above post - where I explained all the other questions about your home and index pages, also.

You have a choice in the properties to have the pages be html or php pages. Saving them as .bvp is right no matter which you do. However, if you save them as php - then the end of the link is .php instead of .html

          Re: Still unsure about hyperlinks

I i have read your above post thats where i got all the information from. i was simply making sure i had it correct or not. like i said i can not double check my work i can only GUESS if it works. so i wanted to run it by you to make sure i understood you. or if i got it wrong? if you want, just make sure my hyper link examples where correct. a simple yes or no to my 3 reinstatements would suffice and if i got something wrong just point it out to me. please don't take this to be rude but i could read your post all day but still miss interpret something and completely confuse my self. thats why i reposted. maybe I should have named my 3 comments "recaps" and not "questions" my fault for not being clear

in short my second post is what i think you told me. is this correct or not? this is all very new to me and its hard for me to get a clear picture.

          thank you for your patients

            Re: Still unsure about hyperlinks

Whatever page you want to be the page that people come to FIRST when typing in your url - will be the one you name index. By naming and saving it as index - when they type in www.yoursitename.com - the page that you save and publish as index is what will show.

ALL other pages will need the extension like
            www.yoursitename.com/extension.html

The TITLE for the page HAS NOTHING TO DO with the names of the pages or linking.

              Re: Still unsure about hyperlinks

ok that makes a little more sense too me. the title thing was really throwing me off i guess. so then when i "name" my site that is all taken care of when i register the domain name im guessing.

thanx for all the help. hyper linking has always made little to no sense to me =-)
