  • Must I pay music royalties

    Hi,
If I add a movie to my site, and in the background it plays music which I lifted off a CD (Laura Brennighan and Neil Diamond) may I do this, or will I be liable for royalties?
    Thank you

You'd be liable for royalties. Most music has a copyright, even radio stations pay out to play the songs etc..

Karen is dead-on about being liable for Copyrighted music being played in whole or in part on your website....

Since you cannot prove that the origin of the track you are using is not from a file-sharing platform or other tracked distributable (movie track, captured broadcast, etc.), ASCAP will find you in violation and has the capability of making you pay estimated retroactive royalties and/or shutting down your entire website. It's been done before, and has been resumed *****ly in the last 4 months, as detailed in the monthly reports.
