public folder

I'm needing confirmation or explanation on organizing the public folder. From searching the forums it seems that the 1st choice is to publish all to the public folder and not worry about organizing. My fear, of course, here is that I will lose track of what's on what page, etc. when updating/cleaning.

What's the best possible way to organize the public folder so that when you no longer need several .gif's for example, you can find them easily?
