Google webmaster tools

Ok I got the email about using webmaster tools and they look like something that would be helpful. Unfortunately I tried to sign up for it and it wont verify my site. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I downloaded the html file to my desktop and then uploaded it to the html box on my index page, published and nothing. Same with the Meta verify. I copied and pasted it in the page properties of the index page under meta tag. Nothing. It can't find it.
I have no idea what to do with the DNS verify so i didn't try that one.
Any help????

hi, i only just today did this, and it worked first go for me, this is what i did.

-right click copied code.
-opened index
-right clicked blank space there to open menu.
-click page html
-clicked on tab"between head tag"
-pasted
-went back and verifyed in google.

few things i dont understand but, is when setting it up, option "from your site or from world sites" what is it searching really? just my site for content links? to better filter the ads i have activated?

Eureka! Thanks so much for the help. I completely missed the Page HTML button. I was trying to edit through Pgae properties.

All you need to do is to FTP the Google page to your public_html.
You do not have to add anything to your index page.
