  • Address Bar Icons?

Just curious to see if anyone has successfully integrated one of these really. You know the teeny weeny little icon that shows up in the address bar of some websites.

I've found out it is called favicon.ico and needs to be in your public folder but recently I helped another member with some errors she was having and it was one of these very things that was causing her error messages. Which left me wondering whether they actually work with VH websites.

    Thanks for reading :o)

    Re: Address Bar Icons?

    Hey Amanda,

I know this thread is a million years old now, but this was something I really wanted to try and I went to that site you mentioned and got it to work for me. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Were you still trying to get it figured out??

    Just wondering.

I created a subdomain folder in my File Manager and put the created .ico file in there. And when you add the HTML to your pages, it worked fine for me. (It's just my initials, but still pretty cool).

      Re: Address Bar Icons?

I wrote a little piece on these http://www.vodahost.com/vodatalk/add...ark-icons.html

I used the on vodahost. not sure if they work with blue voda but they should.

as long as they are in the public_html folder they should work.

some browsers will not pick them up.

i have them on my site but Internet explorer does not pick it up as i do not use an ico file i use a gif. but firefox and camino and mozilla and opera all pick it up fine.

        Thanks George and Rob.

I'd forgotten about this! LOL No, I'm not bothered anymore - they don't work in my browser anyway. Well done to you two for getting them working though.

Thanks for you additions to this thread - I'm sure they'll help others who look into this subject at some time in the future.

Ps. George - your site is absolutely stunning! Well done.

Hey, it's cool. I had been scratching my head on it for a little while too.

And thanks again! I'm basically done "improving" it for the time being. You could probably tell I redid the format just a tad from when I first released it. I just needed a little more horizontal space to work with.

I'm very pleased with my project, and I'm looking forward to designing some more websites in the future. I'm just not quite sure yet as to how to get more involved.

          Take care. :)

I added an icon today to my site. Maybe u can have a peek to see if it will show up in your browser Amanda.

This simplest way I found was
            • Pick any image you want...jpg...gif..etc..as your icon and change the extension to .ico
            • Resize to 32 * 32 (at least thats the size I chose)
            • save it as favicon.ico
            • Ftp to main folder.
I can see mine on Firefox and IE. I'm wondering what other browsers it will show up on.

              Re: Address Bar Icons?

Fav icons should show up most new versions of:

              IE (.ico)
              Mozilla (not sure)
              Firefox (.ico/.gif/.jpg/.png)
              Camino (.ico/.gif/.jpg/.png)
              Safari (.ico)
              Opera (not sure)

32x32 will be shunk to 16x16 which is the offical size.

P.S. george your site rocks is that done in bluevoda?

                Re: Address Bar Icons?

I just tried a favicon just out of curiosity and it works ok in IE6 and Firefox in the favourites menu. In the address bar it works on all pages in IE6 but only the index page in Firefox but I can live with that.

                  Hey Roy

I use FireFox, I can see your icon beside the address bar on all the pages, however I don't see it in IE. Just curious if you used .ico extension as xogez mentioned.

Yes I used the .ico extension.
I just checked and it now only shows on the homepage in both IE and Firefox.

I have just found some info. The favicons work ok in firefox, netscape etc but a bit temperamental in IE6. The site may have to be in your favourites to work. Also if you clcik on the blue icon in your address bar and move it to the right a little bit then release it should appear, you sometimes need to do this a few times before it works.
