I agree that Navaldesign is master. I have worked with many of his instuctions and put together a tutorial that addresses your desire for field validation. Until Navaldesign comes along- perhaps you might want to try this:

Can't help it, got to thank you for your effort in putting up such easy-to-understand tutorials on Forms. Looks easy in BV tutorial but got me 2 days to figure out.....until I come here. FINALLY!!!
