allow visitors download file only if they registered with my site...

I would like to know how to make people sign up first then download catelog on my page. I know that there's a "password protect directory" in my cpanel but I don't know how does it really works...
1. new user: sign up and submit required info
2. exiting user: sing in /password --> download file.

OR
if this is not possible, I want to at least have them provide me with their name and email address before they download the catalog so I can keep them in my record to do follow up.

Your best bet is to install one of the cms' fantastico has to offer. I know a few of them have download managers where you can limit the downloads to registered users only
