  • How to Use the Index Manager in cPanel

    what is cpanel

This tutorial will guide you on how to use the Index Manager in cPanel. For the purpose of this guide, we'll presume that you're currently in cPanel hosting and therefore are viewing the primary display.

Let us begin to learn how to use Index Manager in cPanel. Scroll down the cPanel hosting screen and select Index Manager under the Advanced section of your cPanel hosting screen. Once you have selected Index Manager a new display will appear the Index Manager page. The Index Manager enables you to control how directories on your website are displayed.

Note that if there is no index.html file in a given directory, the contents of that directory will be displayed in a browser. This is typically undesirable and can cause security issues. Through Index Manager you can set your account up to not allow your directory contents to be viewed.

Now let’s navigate to the directory to setup Index Manager, first select public_html folder. We shall select the Demo directory to setup the Index Manager. There are 4 settings to choose from.

-Default System Setting allows the directory contents to be shown.
-No Indexes which does not allow directory contents to be shown.
-Standard Indexing (text only) prevents browsers from viewing the contents of directories that do not contain images files.
-Fancying Indexing (graphics) prevents browsers from viewing the contents of directories that do contain image files.

In this case, we do not want the contents of this directory shown, select the No Indexes option. Then select the Save button. Your page will refresh verifying that your Index Settings have been updated and visitors can no longer view the contents of the demo directory.

Let's go back to the previous screen, by selecting Go Back.

You can change the setting back to default, thus allowing visitors to view the contents of this directory, by selecting Default System Setting and then select Save. The Index Manager settings are now back the way they were previous.

Select the Home icon on the top left of the screen to return to the main page of the cPanel hosting screen. This is the end of the tutorial. You now know how to setup Index Directory protection with any of your directories in cPanel.
