How to use an external monitor

So I'm trying to recover my BV files and all my pics from my T0shiba laptop that has the black screen of death. Took it to our local computer tech and he said he was able to plug it into an external monitor and start the computer in safe mode.
So my hubby picked it up, guys store is closed and I can't get the other monitor to work with the laptop. Tips?

Just plug in the external monitor to the monitor jack at the back of the laptop.

Then start your Laptop.
