  • redirecting a domain

    I hope someone can help me here. I am trying to redirect a domain at another host to my subdomain, www.languagelearningdirect.com. The full url is www.languagelearningdirect.snellvilledbestrestarau nts.com. I thought I had done everything correctly, I redirected it at the other host, and have published the files to the control panel, and it said it had published successfully. Do I have to change the DNS of the other one? If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

      Re: redirecting a domain

      Hello,
      I basically have the same question!!! I have looked at most of the
      tutorials relating to "domain name transferring" however there is no
      information regarding the "redirecting" of hosting services...[unless
      of course I have missed something]. In other words, I'm quiet happy
      with my current domain name provider which currently has an IP Address
      pointing to my old hosting server [of: "6x.17x.17x.xx"]. So if I enter
      a URL of something like "http://6x.17x.17x.xx", I'm redirected to the
      root/home page of my website. However, now I wish to be redirected a
      Blue Voda server instead. But when I enter a BV IP Address [of:
      http://74.52.103.210/ where my hosting account is located], I receive
      only a generic green screen webpage saying: "Great Success !Apache is
      working on your cPanel® and WHM™ Server". So the obvious question is
      what "IP Address" do I use to redirect my domain name to my current BV
      hosted account [which by the way also has a sub-domain associated with
      this redirection process as well]???? Thanks!!!!

        Re: redirecting a domain

        Within the welcome email you received from Voda Hosting when you purchased your voda hosting account, you will find two name servers ..

        They look like ns.??.vodahost.com and ns.??vodahost.com

        These are the two name servers that you must point your domain to from wherever it is that you have your domain name hosted.

        Then you must add on this domain in your control panel via the addon domain icon.

          Re: redirecting a domain

          "LadyEye": I assume your input response was meant for me, so thanks.
          However I'm still a little confused that just changing my DSN values will
          accomplish everything I need done since my "domain name account"
          has the following record information which needs to be updated:

          DNS records, (or Resource Records) are stored in the zone file for a
          "domain name" and are used for translating domain names to IP Addresses.
          They also contain other data, including "Domain Name System", "(DNS)
          server", "Mail server" and "Alias" information.

          "A" Record Add more IP addresses by filling in the fields below.
          (Address Record or IP Address)
          *.domain_name.com points to: "6x.17x.17x.xx"
          "".domain_name.com points to: "6x.17x.17x.xx"

          "CNAME" Record Add more domain aliases by filling in the fields below.
          (Canonical Name or Domain Alias)
          email.dname.com points to: email.ip-6x.17x.17x.xx.net.
          mail.dname.com points to: pop.ip-6x.17x.17x.xx..net.

          "MX" Record Host Name Priority Mail Server
          (Mail Exchange)
          dname.com High smtp.mailserver.net.
          dname.com Low mailstore1.mailserver.net.

          As an FYI [for forum purposes]: I will include a brief technical discription
          for all the records addressed above:

          "A" Record
          ~~~~~~~~~
          The A Record, (Address Record or IP Address), for a domain name is used
          to specify the physical address on the Internet that a user must connect
          to in order to use the information associated with that domain name, such
          as web site files or other types of data. For instance, if a web site for the
          domain name "exampledomainname.com" exists at the address
          123.123.123.123, the IP Address for that domain name will be set to
          123.123.123.123 in the zone file on that domain name's authoritative DNS.
          "CNAME" Record
          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
          A CNAME (Canonical Name or Domain Alias) section of a zone file, is an
          extension to a domain name that allows the creation of derivatives of the
          domain name which can be pointed to the same (or any other) domain
          name on the Internet. An example of a Domain Alias is www.register.com
          points to Register.com, where "www" functions as the Domain Alias and
          accesses the same web site as Register.com.

          "MX" Record
          ~~~~~~~~~~
          The MX Record, (Mail Exchange Record), is the section of a domain name's
          zone file whose entries specify the mail server(s) on the Internet
          responsible for email distribution for a specific domain name. Any mail sent
          to an email address at a domain name must be routed on the Internet
          through the mail servers specified in the MX Record for that domain name,
          in order to reach the recipient.
          Below are the MX Record settings necessary to use email services:
          In CNAME: mail.exampledomainname.com points to: webmail.com
          In MX: exampledomainname.com Priority: High mxmail.com
          Again I really appreciate any input/comments you or anyone may have
          regarding these topics!!! Thanks!!!
                Re: redirecting a domain
                is it possible to configure a second domain name to a subdomain..?
                e.g.
                we've got casinogreco.com and we've got moneytree.gr can we make the moneytree.gr to work directly with dns/mx/and other settings/records of the moneytree.casinogreco.com subdomain..
                thanx a lot..
                p.s. now we have a live (html) redirection on it so moneytree.gr opens an iframe to moneytree.casinogreco.com because we can't do what i've asked..
                thanx in advance..
                p.s.2. is it better to open a ticket for it.?
                    Re: redirecting a domain
                    Daniel,
                    When you say SWITCH, do you mean move the forum itself or just the domain?
                    If your domain host doesnt have a means of redirection, you can simply add some lines to your htacess file on the old domain directory.
                    download your .htaccess file, open it with notepad, and below any lines which might already be in there, add the above, with your info of course. In the case of the domain, you can just eliminate past the slash. Save as and select it in your list or .htaccess dont change the name.. leave it as it is, and reup it to your site.
                      Is that what happened with my GoDaddy site that now looks like my BlueVoda one? I did not plan for that to happen, I've lost all the content that was on that site and have no way to recreate it.
                        The site still shows up, did you NOT renew it? It should still be on your server if you look thru the file manager in the cpanel. You might lose the domain name, but they couldnt take your files.
