Main site redirecting to subdomain?

Hi everyone, I have 2 sites - Main site and subdomain. I no longer need my main however after submitting a support ticket to remove main and make the subdomain my main it turns out that I would have to save all data and start from scratch. I really prefer not to do this if I can help it. My question is, are you allowed to have a site that redirects to the subdomain?
Would I just add the links from my subdomain to the main or is this a no no! Any suggestions please would be greatly appreciated.

You can redirect it with an htaccess file. Google 301 redirect.

Thank you for your response Karen. Sorry but I do not know what a htaccess file is :( I am a computer dummy, not as bad as some but definitely not computer literate by any means. Is there somewhere where I can get information on the above. Or can I not put a note on the home page and say something like "we now have a gift shop - click on link to go to our gift shop" or something like that?

no.. just google it.. its done in notepad.. you probably already have one you can download or edit.. you just need to add some code.. do a search on GOOGLE.. for 301 redirect.
