I'd like to add an "aside" to this very highly valued thread in VodaTalk regarding the use of iFrames vs. CSS/php link styles, and how the quandry I faced was addressed.Originally Posted by Andy128
Since I have a giant "affiliate-based" eCommerce site (www.MyChoiceMall.com) that truly is full of "one-way" outbound links and therefore not SE-friendly in any respect, and I needed a way to provide visitors with an easily navigable means to "click to" the more than 500 stores within a likewise easy-to-manage system on my end, I needed to implement more than one style of tool.
Since I find re-designing the BV site itself into a pure php-based site too overwhelming of a task (since it is constantly being updated and changed), I 'defaulted' by using the globally manageable iFrame menu system that included 2 Go Menus: one that listed "Categories" pages that showed stores grouped accordingly; and one "QuickLink to Stores" so visitors could jump to stores listed by name alone.
>> Since iFrames are not "SE-friendly" and would not contribute to any "rank" or "relevance" I am able to maintain the convenience of the 2 Go Menus (and the global update ability) for visitors, but needed to add the entire list of "Category" Pages at the bottom of each page, each of which was linked to that page as in the Go Menu in the iFrame. Thus, the duplication of this important "element" in a SE-friendly format. And....it adds an aide to replace what some browsers can't see (and the alt tag instructs using this listing as an alternative) as well as doubles as a means for visually challenged visitors.
This way, I was able to leverage the "interior link" aspect to counter-balance the presence of the many "one-way outbound links" the pages contained (each "Category" page listed individual stores with their affiliate banner links). Adding to this corrected perspective is the development of relevant Content on each of these pages, in the form of specific key words serving as a mini-index of the Category each page serves and short, concise introductions of each "store." Again, since the pages and store lineup is constantly changing, I find this task a lot easier sticking to a pure BV-based site, rather than going the dynamic php or true CSS way...
This is what I did to retain the functionality this type of site required (Go Menus, and the global update aspect an iFrame provided) and still keep within the SEO guidelines of relevant Content, balance of interior links, effectually "halving" my outbound link metric, and being able to provide a "rankable" navigation metric to each page.
I will be looking forward to building a php-based site in the future, for it will provide the dynamics that the newer "Perfect Page Model" algorithym is based on (originally hinting at CSS as the 'best-of-breed'), but I wanted to simply give a glimpse at how a "problem" was solved without loss of design, function, SEO metric, or attractiveness to a site.
Just adding "my three cents"......(we all know I can't keep it to two! LOLOL)

I just switched my domain over to Voda today. I am still waiting for the pages to go over completely as I cannot yet see it here on my computer.
However, somone on another forum sent me a message saying they could see it and there was problems with my menu etc. They did a view source and posted this to the forum:
Any ideas on what is wrong here?<DIV style="position:absolute;left:169px;top:10px;width :690px;height:101px;z-index:21" align="left">

As ncope also said, I'm getting a PHP error on some other pages too, though the left menu shows up there, but not much else. Here's the PHP error message:

He had made some critical errors in his coding. I've been having him fix them - and now have him working on fixing lots of the loose ends (like shapes not being positioned properly, etc). But the fatal errors are over with :)
And it was the right forum because the errors all had to do with the php includes - which is why the pages were not showing sooner.
Thanks for the advice!
With Bethers help and advice, I have started changes already. I need her help because for some reason I still cannot see my own site on my computer!
I am working on the menu bars and the lineup of the html boxes. I am sure there are more things out there, but I won't really see them until I can see it myself!
The PHP was goofed up due to my own error, I didn't triple check my work... seems I pay the price and have to learn from mistakes!

whilst you are also declaring it in "menu.php"

Hi, I have read through this thread and nothing is changing on my site.
Here is my site: www.industrialsuppliesandservices.com
The menu bar you see on the left is the same one that is on the menu page you said I should make.
Could this be the problem: instead of creating a blank page I cloned my index page and just deleted everything on it except for the navigation bar and renamed it "menu" page. Also that navigation bar is not made from the menu bar icon but is just shape boxes with text.
Not even the "test number 2" which is on their is gone which I removed.
Thanks much,
Randy
What is the page that is calling the menu.php page ?

What do you mean by the main page? Do you mean my home page or the index page?
This whole sentence is very confusing: Then, in the main page, you are calling this page, and then, you just call the function “menu”, which creates the menubar in your page"
Could you explain this.....Please!

Ok!!! I got it all figured out and working. The key was to read the entire thread....ooops :)
I simply had to go into my control panel and delete the old files plus change my link extensions to php. Didn't realize I had to do that.
Good thing I'm just starting this site.
Question about my navigation bar: It's not a BV menu bar. Its just text links on a background. Would I still be better off using a CSS text menu bar for SE purposes. Here is the link: www.industrialsuppliesandservices.com
Also I read that SE dont like the BV drop down menu. Does that go for CSS drop down menus also.
This forum and the help it gives is like nothing Ive seen.
Thanks Blue voda
Randy
A text menu is the same (as SE are concernes) as a CSS based text menu. And, it is the best solution for SE.

Hi navaldesign,
I have overreached myself! I followed your instructions (or so I thought) re a single menu page but I could not get it to work. All my shortcomings, I'm afraid. Now I've some pages with code all over them after I republished and I do not know how to get rid of it. My site is http://jamesbartondesign.com. If you go to the products page>military 1:8 scale you will see what I mean. If there is anything in this thread that I have not seen I own up to not reading it all (attention span issues) and will take a severe ticking off like a man.
Regards,
James.

Hi navaldesign,
I think that I have cured my problem by deleting the php menu page by using file manager. I would like to use your single page menu because my site will be nearly 100 pages when finished. If I try again do I have to delete my navigation bar on published pages?
James-
I really like your site- nice job. The method that Navaldesign has put together is a real life saver and once you get the hang of it- it is really easy. I am in the process of re-doing my entire site incorporating this method.

No, you don't need to delete anything, when you will publish the pages again (after editing them) the old files will be overwriten. Try again the form, or try http://www.dbtechnosystems.com/formexamples1.php

Hi navaldesign,
Many thanks for your help, I cannot download the pages to you now as I deleted them. However, when I try again, I'm pretty sure I'll come running to you for help.
Hi Andy,
Your offer of help is much appreciated and I will take you up on it. You have had a look at my site and the thumnails: well, there will be scores more of them ( I have to assemble a sample of the complete range of statuettes, then photograph them, then load into the site: not an overnight job). As each thumbnail links to a separate page and adding pages is a continous job you can see how naval's single menu page would be a great help.
Regards to both of you,
James.
Hey Navaldesign,
I have a question for you. Since I developed a new store in BV using the new php method you designed, I was wondering if it is normal for a double head section to be published on all pages. And, would this hurt the SE search for my store?
Also, is there any way to get rid of the second head section? I am curious because some folks have mentioned this.
The new store in BV is http://ediblecafe.com
The double head section is in ALL pages.
Thanks for your help. Now I'm off to work.
If you leave the menu page Title, Author, Metatags etc blank, there is no problem with the double head.
You can also do this: publish the menu page (as php) then download the file from your site. Open it in notepad.
Staritng from the start of the code, delete those two lines (i am referring to YOUR page):
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
<title>Menu</title>
and these:
<META name="revisit-after" content="5 days">
<META name="robots" content="index, follow">
<META name="Robots" content="All">
Save, and upload the file again. This will result in your pages having only the main page metatags.

I can't figure out how to get the page downloaded so I can attempt to fix this problem.
Connect with FTP to your site, and drag the menu.php file from your site to your computer. Just the opposite to what you do when you upload files from your computer to your site.

Navaldesign,
Interestingly enough when I did drag the menu.php page from the right side of the FTP file I drug it to my desk top and opened it up in dreamweaver.
The source indicated that it only had one head section. (Previously I had taken out the page title, as you suggested, and published.)
But, even when I re-published the page there was still two head sections. I'm starting to not get this and getting frustrated.
Ok, let me explain:Originally Posted by ace5548
the main page (i.e. products, or services or whatever else) has it's own head part.
The menu page, on the other hand, has it's own, because it is created as a page.
So, when the main page calls the menu page, it automatically implements the whole memu page code, including it's head. That's why, whilst each page has only one head, when you view it on the browser, it has two: because it is the effect of combining the two files together.
There is no problem if you have two heads. The problem would exist, if the menupage had, inside the head section, metatags, description etc, as the SE would not know which one (the one in the main page head or the one in the menu page head) is the correct one.

Thank you very very much for this indepth explaination. It has helped me tremendously. If you can't tell already, I am still learning a lot about what I am doing.
I really appreciate you getting back to my posts quickly. That and the absolutely great website builder are the reasons I am using BV.
This REALLY Rocks. It is exactly what I had wanted.
you can see my menu bar and the pictures above it wil now be dynamic and I will change when I feel like it for all pages... soon to be over 100
www.moraismiranda.com
This is great information, thanks.
As I understand it, I need to create a different php page for every dynamic element I want to include on all of my web pages.
Now, how do I go about making the layout of all these elements dynamic?
I would guess I need to create a template with all the php elements laid out the way I want it... but that leads to several questions:
1. How do I update the template?
2. If I update the template, will it update all pages created by that template?
3. I am guessing the answer to #2 is no, so how do I change the layout of my template page and have it update all my other pages?
Thanks for the info!
1. If you use the method described, you simply update the template BV page.
2. Yes, if the template is called from these pages. This is the purpose of using this method: to update all pages simply updating a single page.
If you use the method for single elements (header, footer, menubar etc) each element page will have to be updated separately.

Hmm... okay, then what are the advantages of using php and separate elements as opposed to just using the templates and updating them as need be?
And... how do I update templates? I can't even figure out where they are saved, can't seem to open them for editing...
HI I know your not asking me But to make and update a templates you make your page as you would liek to see it without words adn save as a template then if you wnat to update it you can just open the page and re save as a template.Originally Posted by DrewDevil

Imagine having a 100 page site, and you want to update the menubar (or the whole page template). You need to change all 100 pages.
If you use this method, you only change your menu page, and all 100 pages are automatically updated.
This method allowes you to have certain elements as standalone. You save them as individual pages and then you recall them from your pages. This way, if i.e. you change your menu bar, it is automatically updated in all your pages. isn't that an advantage ? isn't that what you were looking ?
Please note that it is NOT necesary to save each element as independent page (header, footer, etc)
You can save the whole page template, together with your menubar, banners and whatever else you like, and then recall it from your pages.
I usually use this method ONLY for the menubar, as i like to have my template visble when i work with my pages.

I am not making my questions clear.
Let me try again.
1. If I build a template without using any php, then create 100 pages from that template, then update the template, will it update those 100 pages automatically?
2. If the answer to #1 is "yes," then what is the added benefit of php?
3. If the answer to #1 is "no," then how do I use php and/or the templates so I can change the layout of all my pages (not the content of the php items, but where on the pages they are located).
For example, let's say I have a php element for a form login box (user enters name and password). Originally, I put that box in the upper left corner of my template and create all 100 pages with that template.
Now, I decide I want to move the login box to the upper right corner on all 100 pages. The form itself is not changing; I just want to re-position it.
How can I do this without changing all 100 pages?
Thanks!
1. No.Originally Posted by DrewDevil
2. Answered by 1. You cannot simply update the template and have your pages updated, unless you use the method described here.
3. As described in post #1 in this very thread. The loggin form must be part of the page that you are calling through the php. If you move it in that page, since this page is called from all the others, your form will move in ALL pages.
It is excactly the same as changing your menubar.

In post #1, you describe two php pages, and so I guess I am confused as to which page you mean when you say "the page that you are calling through the php."Originally Posted by navaldesign
Aha! Do you mean physically move it in the "source php" page? I thought you had said the elements had to go in the upper left corner.
Edit: you do say "Take care to place it in the upper left corner of the page (later we will see how you actually place it in your pages)."
If the element has to be in the upper left corner, how can I move it?
Okay that can't be right.
In the case of the menu bar, which is a single element, yes. If you use this method for a whole page template, then the page must be in the upper left corner, and the html box in your pages also. But, for the rest, all the elements in the source page must be positiones as they will appear in the final page.

Do I have to place/move the html box in each of the 100 pages? That's what I'm trying to avoid.
I used Navals single menu to put in my adress at the bottem of my page. I built it into my template and if it needs to be moved I move it. I also did the same for the work menu like that.Originally Posted by DrewDevil

When you move the menu html box in your template, does it move the menu box on pages you have already created with the template?Originally Posted by Windameer Farm
From what I read, I think the answer is no. Naval said updating the template does NOT update pages created previously created with the template.
What I am trying to solve is the situation where I create 100 pages with a php element, then I want to physically move the element in the layout of those already created 100 pages.
Can you explain what you mean in this post again? I am sorry I am having so much trouble understanding.Originally Posted by navaldesign
Then I misunderstood what your trying to do. I did all mine from the start. You would have to frist install all the Hml boxes where you wnat them one each page you have if they are already done.Originally Posted by DrewDevil

Ok, let me explain: if you want to make changes to the whole template, and, by template i mean the background, the menu bar, the header (logo) footer, as well as ALL the elements that will be in ALL your pages, then you need to make a html box that will have the same dimensions of the template, and place it in the upper left corner of the pages that will be calling the template.
In the template page, you can make ANY change withing the page limits. Once you save/publish the template page, all the pages will be automatically updated.
let's see it in another way: the method, as proposed initially, was NOT intended for moving elements in your pages. It was intended as a way to update easily, the menubar links and buttons.
However, it is quite easy to use it for moving elements also. You just move the element in the source page, and it will be moved in all pages.
Of course, using this method, is based on having a html box in ALL your pages. After that you are done: whatever you change in the template page, changes in ALL page.

Okay, that makes sense! Basically, I am going to have a giant 800 x 1200 HTML box on all my pages that will have ALL the dynamic elements in it. Then I can update or rearrange my php template and it will change the whole thing on every page. Sweet. Thanks!
Cool! You got it!

My question: I like the drop down menus and I want to keep them. I'll use the bottom text menu solution to be "seen" by SE. But the problem is that when I insert the html box the menu doesn't work properly. The first row appears but the others don't show or if they can be seen they can't be clicked.
Can you help me with this: www.doce-design.com
Thank you. Maria João
This method works with dropdown menus. I suggest that you test your original menu to see if it works (by publishing a page with only the menu, without the php code) , and if does then come back and we can see about your problem

thank for your quick answer.
yes it does work without the php code as you can see here www.doce-design.com/index_ing.html
maria
Sorry,
I don't know why but it seems to be working now.
Thank you
Now I'm having problems with links. Menus went crazy. I put the right links but when I publish they seem to be all mixed up. What to do?
maria
Remember when using the single menu (php include function) that all subsequent pages are now .php extension. So the links will have to be changed from .html to .php
Also- they will only work once published. You will not be able to test them in preview.
If that is not a correction to your problem- please post back.
Andy

Hi everyone, i'm new here :) and pls excuse my english, i'm chinese :p
Thanks everyone for providing the great tips, now i have implement the single menu page. but i have 1 question, at first i use CSS menu generator and when open my web page, it ask permission to open and it's annoying. is CSS same as javascript??
then i switch to CSS tab designer 2, it didnt ask permission (it's great) to open the page, but everytime i update the code, i have to manually put in extra line to let the link open in new window, the default is to open in same window.
now i have to use BV text menu, and it's simpler, but no fantasy button :( .
Is there another free generator to recommends?
Thanks again to all the experts out there ^-^

First off...great tip. I have been trying to figure out php for a while, so I am hoping to implement this soon. I am a noob to BV and I have been wrestling with this for hours and cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I am rebuilding our e-commerce website (www.bornathleticstore.com) and I know I need the php to make it easy to update. I Won't be changing the nameservers over until the site is done...so for now the site is at http://75.126.169.142/~upzrxcjf/. So far all I have published is a minimal index page (index.php) and the menu.php file just to test this out, but for some reason the menu will not show up. I have viewed the source code on the index page and all looks good from there...I think the menu.php file is in the wrong place...I've tried several different folders as well as no folder at all, but I don't know where it should go. Can anyone help?
thanks-
tb
okay...I think I got the ftp problem squared away...but the thing still ins't right. See for yourself and please let me know what I need to do to get it to display properly.

I think I figured it out. This is pretty cool!
You were working while we were all sleeping- and answering your own questions :) I think, from what you told me last night, that you're switching to Soho, tho - good luck - where ever/however you build!
I am having trouble getting a php footer to work on my web site. The site is published but I am redoing the template (and then all the pages). On the current publication, I was able to understand and put to use the info provided here to establish a php menu.
I even printed the instructions given here, highlighted, and studied them to no avail. I need the code (apparently spelled out in plain English) that is required to do a footer. This is a link to my "problem".
http://www.elizabethbaileyportraits....w_template.php
This is the HTML I generated in order to achieve this mess:
Any ideas as to what I have done wrong?
<? function footer() { ?>
<center><font face="verdana" color="666666" size="1">Elizabeth Bailey Portraits<br>
Represented by Garden Party Teas, Ltd. Co.<br>
Bardstown, KY 40004<br>
502-541-1844<BR><BR>
<h3>Convenient to the Washington DC area 20194</h3></center><br>
<center>The original oil paintings on this website were all created and copyrighted by<br> Elizabeth R. Bailey.<br>Other than the owners of the portraits presented here,<br>use of these images or their reproduction by any other <br>individual or organization is strictly prohibited.<br><p>
<font size="2" face="Verdana"> <b><?php
include ("footer.php");
footer();
?>
It's working now, I don't know why, but it is! I didn't think I had made any changes to what i'd done but it is working!
Here is a simplified version:
This is the code for the footer: save it as html and upload it in your site:
<center><font face="verdana" color="666666" size="1">Elizabeth Bailey Portraits<br>
Represented by Garden Party Teas, Ltd. Co.<br>
Bardstown, KY 40004<br>
502-541-1844<BR>
<BR>
<h3>Convenient to the Washington DC area 20194</h3></center>
<br>
<center>The original oil paintings on this website were all created and copyrighted by<br>
Elizabeth R. Bailey.<br>
Other than the owners of the portraits presented here,<br>
use of these images or their reproduction by any other <br>
individual or organization is strictly prohibited.<br>
In your page, where you want the footer to appear, place instead this code:
<?php
include ("footer.html");
?>
This is usually done placing a html box in your page (if you use BV) and placing it in the position you want the footer to appear.

html? I got it to work saving as php instead of html. It's working so I don't want to touch it. But I am trying to do the same with the image in the header. I would like to occasionally be able to change this image.
This is what I have now:
http://www.elizabethbaileyportraits....w_template.php
I have used this code in my feeble attempt to create a php file that would enable me to change the image.
I don't know how the other stuff got in there. All I put in was <img src="...."><? function sidemenu() { ?><!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
<title>head_image</title>
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Created by BlueVoda">
</head>
<body bgcolor="#FFFFFF" text="#000000">
<div id="bv_" style="position:absolute;left:0px;top:0px;width:23 3px;height:125px;z-index:0" align="left">
<img src="http://www.elizabethbaileyportraits.com/bv01037.gif"></div>
</body>
</html>
Is it possible to change this image through a php file? and if so, what is the code? thank you in advance.
CORRECTION: This is what I put on my template in an html box where I want the image to be:
<?php
include ("sidemenu.php");
sidemenu();
?>
I saved the new template as a php and published. The php file (which I created in the upper left corner like the menu and footer) contains this code:
<?php
include ("sidemenu.php");
sidemenu();
?><img src="http://www.elizabethbaileyportraits.com/bv01037.gif">
I saved the header image file as "image.php and published and got nothing! Where is the error of my ways?
http://www.elizabethbaileyportraits....w_template.php
I'm going to get away from this for a while. It exhausts me.
Please understand that these are two different things that you need to do.
1. Create the element that will be included. This may be a menu, a footer, a side menu, a Logo, anything.
This page MUST start with
<?
function sidemenu() {
?>
The second part is the actual code that creates the visual effect. In your case :
<img src="http://www.elizabethbaileyportraits.com/bv01037.gif">
in the case of a side menu (the name you asign to the function is NOT important, you could have evan called it "myheader" or "logo" or "mybanner" or whatever.
As you see, you have missed the last part,
<?
}
?>
So the complete code would be:
<?
function sidemenu() {
?>
<img src="http://www.elizabethbaileyportraits.com/bv01037.gif">
<?
}
?>
2. Then, in your template page, you need to have simply
<?php
include ("sidemenu.php");
sidemenu();
?>
in the html box.
However, if you building the pages in BV you do NOT need to worry about correct coding. If you actually use BV, there are only two things to do:
1. Create in BV a page with the element you want. In this case, the page must only have the image. The rest of the code you is automatically generated by BV. Place in the start of page
<? function sidemenu() { ?>
and, in the End of page:
<?
}
?>
The second part, that described in step 2., is the same as described.

Naval,
I am still having a problem getting this to work in the header of my template. I am using BV. I have created the menu and footer in php in a new template. They both work fine. I have done the same thing for the image in the header and this is the result:
http://www.elizabethbaileyportraits....w_template.php
I am going to assume that this code means something to you. I simply don't understand it.
There is a gray rectangle in the header. This is a background shape
(serving as a border) that sits just under the image that is supposed to be there! I tried removing the rectangle to see if that was the problem but it was not, so I put it back.
I went to my FTP manager and deleted all previous attempts at creating this element. I can send screen prints of the codes and where I placed them if that would help. I have gone over and over this but cannot find the problem. Sorry to be such a pest.
It seems that no "sidemenu.php" file exists on the server as i get a 404 error.
Make sure that ou have published the page as "sidemenu" with it's properties set to be php

Naval, I had chosen another name to save and upload the file not realizing it had to be sidemenu. After your last post, I deleted the old file, changed the name to "sidemenu.php" and published. It worked! but I still have some verbiage behind the image. It says:
"Fatal error: Called to undefined function sidemenu() in home/pfvgmdxy/public_html/EBP_new_template.php on line 72"
The verbiage is behind the image but shows to the right. I can quickly read what is under the image by clicking on refresh.
http://www.elizabethbaileyportraits....w_template.php
I tried moving the image location in the template and publishing again to see exactly where the verbiage was coming from and it stayed behind the image. Any idea as to what is causing this?
The code that you have added in your "sidemenu" page should be:
<? function sidemenu() { ?>
If you have named it anything else, the function "sidemenu" is not defined, so the script gives you that error.

hi, i'm back :)
i realise something about this kind of codes,
<?php
include ("sidemenu.php");
sidemenu();
?>
for my website, i use it for my leftside menu, rightside menu and my footer.
for my leftside menu, i use
<?php
include ("leftsidemenu.php"); <---any name
menu();
?>
for my rightside menu, i use
<?php
include ("rightsidemenu.php");
rightsidemenu();
?>
i found out that leftsidemenu.php can also be any name but menu(); cannot be change. eg, if i change to leftsidemenu(); there is error and it need to be menu(); and other menu
What you are doing here is define functions and then call them in your page. It is obvious that a function can only be defined once. Redefining the same function will cause a conflict.

I'll give up on this if it can't be resolved soon. I simply cannot believe my php file for the image in the header won't work especially since the menu and footer both work. And it does bring up the image. so what is causing the verbiage behind it? What does the message mean? Where is this line 72 ?
<b>Fatal error</b>: Call to undefined function sidemenu() in <b>/home/pfvgmdxy/public_html/EBP_new_template.php</b> on line <b>72</b><br />
I have worked on this for hours again today, tweeking everything I know to tweek. I even deleted the new_template and sidemenu.php files and started over. same result.
I have other sites to build much more complex than this little one. If I can't get this fixed, I won't be very optimistic about all the rest I need to learn.
Use my form and send me all your related files. i will fix any errors and send the files back to you.

See where it says browse, etc below the questions? thats where you browse your hard drive for the files you want to send him. They upload and then he downloads to his computer.

No I won't. There is nothing on that form that allows me to upload a file. When I put in the file's path from my pc it says: "The field Site must be less than 30 characters !"
What am I missing?
Yes, i had set this limitation. However, since that is NOT a required field, you could simply leave it blank. Try again now, i have set it to 60 chrs. I also added 3 more upload fields, so you don't need to upload one file at a time
