More organization when publishing files to website

Dear Sirs,

When You publish a page to the website through the file/publish option, BlueVoda puts the main html/php file in the same directory (www) alltogether with the bv*.gif and the author's *.jpg files.

As I keep on publishing more and more pages, this "online" folder it's starting to look to me like a big mess.

So My wish would be that Bluevoda would create(when publishing):
1) One folder for BV*.gif images and other folder for author's images.
OR
2) A system similar to when You use the preview/save as, meaning if the file is aaa.htm the images would be kept in a folder called aaa_files.

In my opinion this last option would be the best. Maybe You could create a new tab on the tools/options menu, and You could let Your customers choose the option:
- "html/images-All in one folder"
OR
- "html/images-Separate folders"

As I am the organized type of guy, this is forcing me to creat a directory on a below level and then edit the html/php obtained file with other software (like dreamweaver) to change the directories where to look for those images.

Hi, not quite the same but you can do this by uploading your images to the server. Lets say to a folder called images. Then link your page images to this folder . with this bit of code in a html box. Just make the html box the same size as your image for a guide of the space it will take up on your BV web page.

Your pages will also publish much quicker this way.

That was a beatiful, beatiful idea...

I have put the logos and images in the place that I wanted them to be, and then right clicked on the image /Html and copied the html code to an html box and worked perfect, like You said really fast publishing and got the result that I was looking for with no further "after publishing" changes.

What about the bv*.gif that is created by BlueVoda for the squares and other figures ?
Those files are still placed in the middle of the html and php files on the www directory.

If there were any trick to overpass this point, it would also be VERY VERY interesting. Please let me know.

Hi, unfortunately is all I can suggest here, is taking a copy of your bv page & removing bits on the page that are not needed & publishing this page to the image area with just the BV images/shapes & then linking the same way. Once it is publish to the BV area, I believe you can delete the page on the server as the image are kept as a separate file.
If its just a shaped/panel you want on the page. It maybe worth just using a single table as a shape with a fill colour. If you have a look at my site, the page is made by using just single table boxes. It tends to load a lot quicker as well.
If you do use these methods & a simple menu system. You will find it so much easier to transfer BV pages between different computers, as you won’t have the image problem many users have.
And if you want to get a bit more adventurous. You can introduce Navals .php way of building pages. LINK.

Hi, glad your getting on OK! its worth using 2 tables if you want to create a border. The only reason i say this is that different browsers show the borders in a different if you use the tables one & might not look pleasing the way some might view. If you do need a graduated background to one of the tables, you are best popping a shape on that page that you publish to the image area. You can then just make this 2 or 3 pixels wide & what ever size in the other direction. Then you can place it in a table it will auto repeat the image.

About my initial thread, I must explain that I work with a lot of squares ones over the others, with different inside colours, some with round corners, and others with straight corners, different line colours, it can make very funny and nice effects.

These creations of mine "use" a lot of bv*.gif files and I still think that maybe the BV creators could publish these bv files in a more organized way, puting them inside of a directory, so they dont make confusion with the php and htm files in the www directory.

Hi, it would be a nice idea if all images went to one folder. But on the other part, it may get a bit complicated trying to work with lots of different shapes & getting them to line up using html boxes. But what i was partly thinking of was a page like this full of your sites shapes.

I have been using a few different coloured bv shapes so I just save them with a different name now. That fixed my problem of my black and silver shapes turning into yellow and green ones (or vice versa depending on what was the last page I published) I used on a different page when they were saved as the bv shape number gif. LOL.

Yes, and that's what to do because you then have named it it's own unique name. Often problems with images appearing or not is due to file name issues and can be corrected this way. Much the same as any files.

I did how you describe thoose folders separatly but i didn`t work then i did like the Naval way and still i do not work.
I still have all of the images in my root dir in a big mess.
So would you be kind and explain it little bit moore in detail how to make it work?

Chris, been trying this all day and can't get it to work for me. Now this is for a sub domain account, however I have put the images folder within the main account, is that still right? Or do I put it in the sub domain folder, and if so, does that change the code? Have tried both ways but just get an empty box with a red x and the alt tag only.

I have tryed it over 10 times with different methods with no luck so i dont know what else to do.
Maybee BV should upgrade this webbuilder with (bar) saying:save file to.../save all files to... or some like that.
In that way we get the .html files in one folder and the rest to a folder we choose at our own.
So we can do it right at once.
And i think many of our problems would dissapear then.
Just imagine how it will look in my public folder with over 800mb files.
If you find an answer to this question pleas TELL ME becouse at this point i dont dare making/downloading 800mb files in my public folder.

I am trying to get into the habit of when ever I create a directory; I pop an image folder in as well.

Ok...my hotlink is enable and in there i only have the domainname.
Now what! I newer used a hotlink before so im not sure what to do next.

Also in my tests I am using pieces of pictures/photos/images and putting them together on the webpage. It's impossible to make html textboxes for all these pictures because these images are very difficult to line up ones with the others with html boxes, because with html boxes You can't see the result until You publish the page.
Neverthless I tried to do it, but then my pages got full, full, full of little squares saying HTML, it's hard to work there.

Isnt' this a "Wish List & idea bin" subforum ?

I agree with Supermax. I also think that BV creators should think of:

1) give the opportunity to the operator to choose the online folder where to publish a) our images b) bv*.gif files.
OR
2) Simply place them all inside a "bluevoda" named folder(or whatever name) and then put these files in this folder when publishing.

This way there would be no confusion with the php and htm files in the www directory.

This is my oppinion and this is one of things which is great here at the Vodahost forum is that people have the opportunity to speak and give suggestions for IMPROVING.

Let's just hope they use them,

Hi, would be nice!
Only as an idea! On your side of things with lots of small images. Why not make your page & then take a screen shot in preview with your browser.
(Ctrl-PrtScn together) You will only have to deal with 1 image then. Chances are it may even be less KB’s.

Thank you Chris that worked. I didn't try it on the site you suggested but on another using the same code but altering the url and the image. Now... aoart from this meaning no longer having to host all the images on my pc, you mentioned the page would publish quicker but would this also make the page download any quicker for the viewer?

Without in any way wanting to turn BV into Dreamweaver the way Dreamweaver does this as a default is put images in an images folder, html/php/asp etc in another and then when you publish you get the opportunity or not to include "dependent files" which include images.
I have a good speed down connection but a slow (128Kb with a following wind) up connection and publishing all the bv and other images everytime even tho' they've not changed is time consuming.
I'm with pipesportugal on sperating images out, that includedes the bv's.

I tend to use this quick tip
which keeps all the images on a page together, listed under the page name.

TOOLS - Options - Image Name Prefix
click the box to use page name for image prefix
