how do I determine where inserted tags show up?

I've tried putting elements like vodahost affiliate, and others onto my page by copying the code and placing it in various locations on the HTML. They always show up at the centre at the top of the page. Can I control where the banner shows up?

Put the code in a html box
resize and place where required
