Resolution Questions

I am very familiar with photoshop and would like to create my 'images' in that. Then upload them and link them to my pages. However, I am not sure what to set my resolution at (72, 200, 300 etc.). I design digital s**** products and usually use 300 but know that those are very large and can take a lot of time to download. Also, which format is best to save the images in ... jpeg, gif, etc.

I'm a newbie and have a very hard time understanding computer website language so go easy on me

I don't have a domain name yet, I want to see if I can figure out and design in this program before I purchase one.
